Embracing Innovation Ecosystems for Evolution and Revolution

My definition of innovation ecosystems is that they are dynamic, interconnected networks of diverse actors and resources that come together to collaborate to drive innovation opportunity and create a more compelling value.

They are progressively replacing “just” innovation as this tends to be housed in one organization, to be developed and delivered on the resources and insights they have.

Innovation Ecosystems are richer due to this diversity, different knowledge and market intelligence that a broader group can bring into the creative thinking and market realization.

This interconnected community find ways to bring new ideas to market, built on their shared vision, having a collaborative and supportive environment to use, such as a shared platform, and able to reach out to a variety of resources that become accessible to all participants.

Recommending we change to the Composable Innovation Framework

Designing a Composable Innovation Framework

During May and June 2023, I worked through and concluded my thinking on why we needed to change our Innovation approach. A radical change from far to often a linear one, into a new, more up-to-date, and dynamic solution for managing innovation.

This solution recognises that innovation discovery all the way through to implementation is now so often non-linear and that is causing plenty of problems connecting all the understandings fully up in one manageable place

I have called this the Composable Innovation Framework– here is why and what went into this proposal that I feel should be adopted for managing innovation in the future.

The importance of Business Ecosystems? Are you future-aware?

Building out the arguments to make a compelling business change case for Business Ecosystems needs to cover significant areas to address and recognise. Any view needs to offer some compelling reasons to recognize that there is a powerful need to shift to a more modern, network-centric view for business operations and strategy. Compiling this set of opinions takes time to shape into a concise document.

Here, I want to limit the positioning to two parts: today’s need to change our thinking, recognition, and design aspects toward business ecosystems and then provide a future awareness document.

You need to recognise its multiple parts to make any significant change towards ecosystems as a business approach. So, my aim here is to provide a more comprehensive and forward-looking perspective, making the argument more compelling and actionable for C-level executives.

Ecosystems lack a perceived differentiation

Achieving a new positioning in Ecosystem differentiation

I have been spending a lot of my time working through Business Ecosystems, trying to get a decent “handle” on what matters as the most critical dynamics and, secondly, why ecosystems are rising in importance to support reshaping multiple business landscapes and determine what practices will unlock value and impact.

Staggering as it might seem, 86% of clients perceive ecosystems offered by firms to be very similar and want to know why their time and investment in any Ecosystem will enable them to stand out and be differentiated with all its potential disruption in the risks it can pose.

Ecosystems are complex, and I have been trying to encapsulate a (more) concise positioning statement to amplify what needs to be considered and where I think I can really help. Ecosystems are so important in our designs for the future, and a collaborative approach combining expertise, diversity, and knowledge is needed.

In recent years, the business world has undergone a profound transformation. The traditional view of organizations as rigid hierarchies with clear boundaries and linear processes is rapidly becoming obsolete.

Instead, we’re witnessing the emergence of fluid, interconnected ecosystems where value creation is distributed, collaborative, and dynamic, moving across multiple Ecosystems of collaborators to solve more complex challenges and enhance business value. This shift is not just semantic; it represents a fundamental change in how we understand and operate within the modern business landscape.

Why are innovation ecosystems important?

Recently, I presented my framework to the GIMI think tank GIMI was initiated by a worldwide group of chief innovation officers, innovation executives, academics and consultants in 2009.

The framework I offered is built upon interconnected ecosystems. Connecting innovation, business, dynamics, and enterprise is crucial for creativity, growth, adaptability and growth.

In the event, I was asked what the difference is and why we should shift from today’s traditional innovation models to this interconnected one where innovation ecosystems are the foundation.

So, I want to explain the importance of shifting our thinking towards designing innovation ecosystems. Organizations must rethink their innovation strategies and approaches and focus on opening up to building these interconnected ecosystems.
