My review of 2024 from a posting perspective has been a really positive one.

Taking my two primary posting sites of paul4innovating.com and ecosystems4innovating.com I wrote just over 100 posts, which always comes as a surprise in what it entails in time invested.

The split between sites was fairly even as I continue to increase my focus on building the building case for Ecosystems, in thinking and design.

In this reflective post I took a look back on why I moved from an “absolute” focus on innovations into innovation and business ecosystems.

Moving beyond Innovation into Business Ecosystems

For many years innovation has been my core, in consulting, coaching, advisory and mentoring but it simply, over time, became a restrictive spot to be.

Innovation inside the one company is (very) outdated and does not take account of the significant changes occurring in technology enablement or solving increasing complex challenges.

Far too many organizations are locked in this “doomed” world of diminishing returns from being self-possessed in their focused.

We need to build out from open innovation into ecosystem thinking and design.

First, stepping back taking open innovation beyond its original positioning which was a pivotal moment in innovation management.

“Open innovation is a term used to promote an Information Age mindset toward innovation that runs counter to the secrecy and silo mentality of traditional corporate research labs.^] More recently, it is defined as “a distributed innovation process based on purposely managed knowledge flows across organizational boundaries. The boundaries between a firm and its environment have become more permeable; innovations can easily transfer inward and outward between firms and other firms and between firms and creative consumers, resulting in impacts at the level of the consumer, the firm, an industry, and society.^[7]– Wikipedia abridged

For me, the emphasis needs to keep constantly move towards Business Ecosystems

Ecosystems foster collaboration and accelerate the dissemination of knowledge through the network effect, in fact, value creation increases with each actor in the ecosystem, which in turn nurtures the ecosystem as such.

James F. Moore originated the strategic planning concept of a business ecosystem. The basic definition comes from Jim Moore’s book, The Death of Competition: Leadership and Strategy in the Age of Business Ecosystems and focused more on (at the time) the high tech industry studying the co-evolution in social and economic systems applying the concept of networks of organization coming together that provide mutual support and co-evolve contributions. It is based on the principle that organizations, as living organisms, are most successful when their development and behavior are aligned with their core purpose and values – what we call “social DNA’”

Evolving towards Ecosystems for innovation and business

This evolution towards Ecosystems attracted me increasingly from mid 2016 where I attempted to separate my thinking into innovation on one posting and ecosystems on another. That in all honesty has never worked, these fuse together constantly and for good reasons.

On my ecosystems4innovators.com site I have written nearly 250 posts since September 2016 but this has ramped up far more in the past 18 months of so as I began to propose my own frameworks in my understanding and studying ecosystems for a fair number of years

Where I stand today

Ecosystems for business have an absolute need to be integrated, they are heavily interconnected. This post of A New Way to Drive Value Through The Integrated Business Ecosystem Design provides handy visuals depicting the different ecosystems that make up (my) integrated business ecosystem framework.

I have spend time on measuring success, defining the different components, exploring and extending this out. I had a recent post showing some key developments in this thinking with reference posts, moving towards providing a compelling business ecosystem case

I sought out a AI generated view from Google NotebookNL research assistants discussing why Ecosystems are really different to consider, which I found encouraging and good, easy listening.

Recognizing the importance of Dynamic Ecosystems

The most exciting work has been on the importance of recognizing Dynamic Ecosystems. I believe these are a new core of organization design.

So I close out this short summary on Why Business Ecosystems are highly valuable to think through and turn towards 2025 and my plans to support the evolving understanding of the value and importance of Ecosystems in business.

Turning to 2025.

The focus has to shift even more into engagement by building a blueprint and roll out a structured approach to thinking and designing on Business Innovation and Ecosystems.

In the work ahead for 2025.

In the pipeline are exploring sustainability for Ecosystem building, comparing Natural Ecosystems as well as looking at Neutral Ecosystems, from the AI Gen perspective, then building and extracting Innovation help and support more through Gen AI to aid acceleration, design and execution.

There is a real need of a harder assessment and re-looking at bringing in the Ecosystem Platform Management into a different perspective than our current platform focus, leading to building ecosystems, it should be ecosystem and networks drive platforms and their unique designs.

Resetting the Voice of any journey

The customer journey through ecosystems is providing a rolling out of thinking and updating. There is a need for a new Voice of the Customer, the Voice of Partners within any Ecosystem thinking and more importantly provide that “higher” level of the Voice of Ecosystems.

I will be continuing to look for new tools, methodologies and structured approaches to build on my recent work.

Ecosystem mapping, visual flows extending a minimum viable ecosystem (MVE), establishing heath and metrics, exploring decision trees and complex value webs are on the list to extend even furher from my initial investigations.

I am keen to extend out my interconnected implementation toolkit and structure in 2025. I have a whole host of approaches here to explore and extend through deeper engagements.

Of course, the integrated business ecosystem framework is very front and centre to business ecosystems. It drives the  research and translation of all of the above to continue to build it out in recognition and business transformation.

The increasing shift to Ecosystem Coaching and Advising.

Most importantly I will be turning increasing towards Ecosystem Coaching, Advising and Mentoring to build on this engagement emphasis. The need to provide impact from Ecosystems becomes essential for passing through the different coaching stages as a big part of any transformation.

For me as a big part of this Ecosystem work is comprehension, reduce uncertainties and anxieties, to gain a greater confidence to experiment and draw others into a trusting, highly collaborative relationship of engagement, learning and managing diversity of opinions.

I keep motivated on Ecosystems for this need in delivering a higher purpose, providing the operating and management purpose and delivery to give this

2024 was a good year of Ecosystem discovery, progress and fulfillment, now I move into 2025, gearing up for greater engagement.

Recognizing the value and potential to the Integrated Ecosystem Design

The concept of having an integrated business ecosystem is central to the future growth and value businesses can provide. Yet, these have to be seen as highly collaborative, where mutual co-creation through networks of partners join forces to overcome more complex and challenging problems we seem to be facing today.

The single organization is unlikely to bring the depth of knowledge, diversity and access in resource and market realization. We need to learn to work in collaborative Ecosystems.

Firstly a brief background “Let me summarize this on a current state of Ecosystem play, as it forms the basis of where I go forward in the continued development of Business Ecosystems. The important why I see these as significant in value to any business searching for new growth, different impact points and recognizing the value of collaborating within networks of ecosystems to accelerate their offerings, making these more resilient and sustaining.

The core of Ecosystems to thrive needs to be dynamic.

The core is Dynamic Ecosystems as these require the environment for the others to respond and react with innovation becoming the triggering or base point.

So why does the Dynamic Ecosystem forms the core to stimulate and bring dynamism into the integrated Business Ecosystem Framework. It feeds, stimulates and challenges.

1. Mutual Reinforcement: Dynamic Ecosystems create the conditions for rapid innovation, while Innovation Ecosystems provide the tools and processes to capitalize on that dynamism.

Business Ecosystems are the growing force to galvanize change and build a more collaborative culture, where the partners’ diversity enables solutions to be solving more complex and challenging problems we seem to be facing today.

When thinking about and designing business ecosystems, you must recognize that different ecosystems contribute, evolve, and determine their part in a “bigger” scheme of things. Recognizing that innovation, business, dynamic, and enterprise ecosystems through the design to be interconnected has evolved into the Interconnected Business Ecosystem framework.

Below in this post, I have clarified where the Dynamic Ecosystem fits and its significant contribution, influence, and impact on the health, dynamism, and future solution orientation we strive for in any new solutions. The C-level pitch sums it up well.

I have written extensively about “the dynamics within a system,” especially an innovation one, arguing that adaptation and resilience are consequences of practising “dynamics.” I got caught up in the importance of studying and recommending the need to build dynamic capabilities. More recently, I have written about the critically crucial dynamic ecosystem that “sits” in the interconnected business ecosystems of innovation, business, dynamics, and enterprise.

I will be honest I still can’t crack the complete dynamics code but I am trying hard as are many other people, it holds much of our future requirements. I developed an innovative fitness landscape methodology into a capability model based on dynamic capabilities, providing a nine-step approach.

I recently built out dynamic capabilities for Ecosystems, into a Journey in achieving a Dynamic Ecosystem in nine steps. My best mind maps were constructed around these dynamic capabilities to explain them and the interconnected parts required. It is a pity I can’t show them here.

Constantly extracting the essence of Dynamics in capabilities and ecosystems are the “essential oils” for ecosystems; they allow for rapid adaptability, continuous learning, extracting network effects, and greater decentralised decision-making and building resilience. Innovation thrives in an environment that recognizes dynamic ecosystems as the opposite of static, siloed systems. They constantly search for adapting, evolving and collaborating to thrive and grow.

Exploring the potential of adopting Dynamic Ecosystems

It is within the ability of organizations to integrate, reconfigure and build internal and external resources to respond to the often complex and challenging environmental changes and seize new opportunities but they need an organizing framework. The role of dynamic capabilities is to identify emerging trends, adapt strategies and allocate or re-order resources to meet those changes in rapid ways to capitalize within the organizing Dynamic Ecosystem.

I have written on “understanding Dynamic Ecosystems and why they should be different” emphasizing their unique characteristics and how and why they are different from other ecosystem models by adaptability, continuous learning, networking value and providing greater resilience to change.

Also, I have written on the “critical differences in understanding dynamic ecosystems” as this ecosystem actively supports other ecosystems to provide further impact and dynamism. They leverage, orchestrate and accelerate what is happening.

When I was working through my opening framework, published in January and February 2024, “Building the Case for The Hierarchy of Business Ecosystem Needs,” it was the dynamic layer that held my attention as the most exciting to recognise for its differences I was suggesting in Thriving in the Dynamic Ecosystems as a core post within the series. I put this down as a pivotal role as it can transform and challenge conventional business practices; it builds adaptability and resilience to navigate uncertainty, addressing this and not ignoring it, attempting to manage and mitigate risks.

Dynamic Ecosystems strives to be future-orientated, focusing on advancement and continuous learning, and delivers the primary drivers for economic advantage by proactively shaping market dynamics and positioning to spot and seize breaking opportunities, I call ecosystem sensing to stay ahead of the curve and gain those strategic edges.

The aim is to relate these to where your organization is in their existing capabilities, where they need to go, in identifying and clarifying the necessary capabilities they need to have, so as to achieve certain strategic goals and then, “we”, together, collectively prioritize the critical ones as ‘must have’ and then set about filling the gaps.

This is the innovative fitness journey needed to be travelled.

The building of those more ‘dynamic’ capabilities and competencies are the ones you need so as to provide for a more dynamic innovation environment and deliver unique capacity for your ongoing strategic goals.

So let me tell you what this is all about and I will describe this with heavy referencing from Geoffrey Moore’s book “Dealing with Darwin”. Without doubt one of my favourite books in how it helped me piece together a large part of my dynamic innovation fitness puzzle.

First you have the internal view.

Critically, you need to take a fresh look at your internal dynamics, at what happens when core competencies cease to differentiate, how resources must be shifted to new areas, how deeply threatening such changes can be, how protective inertia emerges as the enemy of destabilizing innovation, and finally, what kinds of management responses can best deal with inertia and redirect its energy towards fresh innovation.

This is the inward-facing dilemma that needs to be addressed.

Then you have the External viewpoint

It is about creating a competitive advantage in an increasingly commoditizing world. To lead that effort, you must continually reappraise what role your company is playing in the market ecosystem, how the market landscape of competition is changing and understand where your competitive advantage has come from in the past and where it is likely to come from in the future and with what kinds of differentiation will be most rewarded, and what kinds of innovation are most required.

This is the outward-facing portion of the story.

Then you have that growing sense of observations

Innovation and inertia: we often get stuck in particular types of innovation, promote given skills to the detriment of others, equally necessary but ignored or not understood fully.

We fail to adapt to market changes, we fund to much of one type of innovation to the exclusion of others and in the process create internal traffic jams of sorts, frustrations and tempers to match.

We squander our scarce resources of time, talent and management attention on initiatives that fail to give us a competitive advantage and get constantly impeded by these forces of inertia all around us. Indeed, the more successful we have been in the past, the stronger the resistance to any subsequent change in the innovation course.

Then you have those real-world worries

So what does keep management up at night about their performance on innovation? The rising anxieties stem from that worry that perhaps we are losing our ability to innovate, can our people still compete? Do we really get it? And even if we do, can we still get it to the market place at the right time and feed that need? Can we actually see the light of day?

Then Evolutions can happen

Evolution proceeds more gradually but in times of crisis we are forced to make choices that enable you to step back and reflect. I would argue we are all increasingly facing our own types of crisis in today’s volatile world.

If you were able to achieve an understanding that is based on more informed choice, so you can extract yourself from one path that makes you increasingly vulnerable and provides support to commit to a new core focus, one that offers you a more sustainable competitive position on which to compete through innovation. 1. The task is to develop a suite of core innovation competencies with proven capability to create (unique) competitive advantage.
2. The challenge for management teams is to choose the type of innovation appropriate to their situation and to exploit it deeply enough to create definitive separation from their direct competitors. This can be completed in different ways but a thorough analysis is recommended
3. The key is to identify and then extract (scarce) resources from (existing) context and re-channel this into the new core that will differentiate you through the new emerging innovation competencies and systemic approach.

Survival of the fittest dominates irrespective.

• We are all caught in this Darwinian race- all of us it seems.
• So where do you want to focus your limited resources? The ‘natural selection’ choice to increase your abilities to innovate linked to your needs.
• Start by mapping out your innovation direction to the tasks and capabilities on hand and those needed or required to get you to certain predefined goals.
• Chose the path that will leverage and expand your knowledge, capabilities and capacities and start the journey.
• Start recognizing the opportunity spaces and gaps when you think you should be heading but feel you might have constraints in moving towards.
• The greater you can identify the need for improving your ‘innovation fitness’ allows you to get closer to accelerating towards the seen and yet unseen opportunities.
• The greater ‘innovation fitness’ equates to more value creation potential.
• As you learn to recognize the difference between managing the existing routines and building the new capabilities, the quicker you can absorb these new learnings within the organization, so they can become the new dynamic routines that are needed.
• You then begin to reduce uncertainties and strengthen the true innovation capabilities you need to thrive and survive in this Darwinian world.
