<p><strong>So do Art and Science combine for innovation?</strong></p>
<p>First of all, what we do does come from us as humans, in our actions and needs,these are also the starting point for innovation, pushing for something new; it is linked to experiences and questioning, seeking out and wanting to explore “all things possible”.</p>
<p>The powerful combination of designing and providing something that pushes our existing knowledge, our boundaries, understanding or expectations and capturing it in thought, in explanation or detailing out the discovery makes up the art and science of innovation.</p>
<p>We just need to find even-better and consistent ways to combine them continuously.</p>
<p>Science chases progress, Art really does not. Art just looks to make a change, sometimes evolving, sometimes in powerful new ways and it does this from the evolving multiple perspectives and studies of much that is existing, both physical and within the mind to express this to others.</p>
<p>Sometimes, Science is often constrained by a far too linear approach and this needs somehow change where we need to think in less rigid, structured ways today.<br />
<span id="more-10690"></span></p>
<p>We are demanding, no, expecting, more in the future. Art and Science agree they are both forms of exploration, one explores the imaginary more and then this challenges and pushes the scientific and engineers to find the answers.</p>
<p>They both change our reality and innovation should be fueling this and always be pushing our expectations that little bit more, driving our determination to push out the frontiers of science and art..</p>
<h4><strong>Art and Science are the bookends for innovation</strong></h4>
<p>I was reading an article about the great disconnects between Art and Science by Kristi Charish, and I loved the way she explained her thoughts, in particular:</p>
<p>“<em>Art leads to scientific innovation and science inspires art. Like a pair of bookends, they work best in tandem and change the way we view the world. Without one, you can’t have the other and there is a lot to celebrate in that!</em>”</p>
<h4><strong>So have we fast-forwarded so much?</strong></h4>
<p>I think we still see art and science operating in different worlds, in different compartments and they often don’t combine as we would like. Yet Kristi Charish is right, they do prop up innovation but we do need to stop using them as the ‘book ends’ and bring them into the middle to combine more and more until they are ‘fused’ as one.</p>
<p>The very best, the breakthrough, the new discoveries happen when we combine in today’s world.</p>
<h4><strong>Getting the ends to fuse!</strong></h4>
<p>It is these ‘emerging’ fusion points of art, design, engineering, and science coming together and coalescing that are giving us great innovation. Art and design provide innovation with analogies and compelling stories, alternative structures, inspiring techniques, challenging methods and knowledge to push our boundaries and our minds. It inspires us to then often push science, technology and engineering more and more to translate this.</p>
<p>Just think of the architecture of great buildings, pushing the boundaries of function and design with availability or the technology and design of the iPad or iPhone that pushed those boundaries of the accepted, and changed the norm for measuring the future.</p>
<h4><strong>So we need to rebuild and recombine</strong></h4>
<p>Specialization has a place but has it been pushed too far? Often we hear that the world is “complex”, or the issues cannot be resolved by the best minds in the ‘given’ area, well we need a new way based on total knowledge. Piero Scaruffi offered his view in a talk on “Bridging the gap between Art and Science” at Swissnex, in San Francisco in 2007.</p>
<p>He remarked “t<em>he digital age is providing us the opportunity to rebuild the continuum …has enabled an unprecedented degree of exchange, interaction, integration, convergence and blending”</em></p>
<p>Scaruffi suggests we are able to move out of the discrete spaces we have found ourselves in and finally recombine knowledge in new ways. He argues we live in a context-specific world that is based increasingly on a knowledge-specific society, so different from the last time art and science came together in a knowledge-deprived society to offer this new continuum.</p>
<h4><strong>Are we arriving?</strong></h4>
<p>Perhaps we are about to arrive at the age of the “rinascimento l’innovazione”, <em>the innovation renaissance period</em>. <p>We encourage you to disrupt the accepted, to constantly challenge the current ways and push into uncomfortable territory. We suggest you seek out customers’ unmet needs, and unexplored opportunities to give a new diversity to any thinking, and then we set about accelerating these ideas to fruition. Those all need abundant and constant agility.<br />
<span id="more-9071"></span><br />
Many of our business organizations continue to struggle with innovation and how to make it repeatable, sustaining and transformational. Often, it seems, the more large organizations attempt to become ‘agile’ the more they seem to achieve the very opposite, of rigidity.</p>
<p>Finding solutions to building agility is part of the necessary answer to achieving greater innovation solutions.</p>
<p>Our aim is to strengthen the core by building in increasing ‘waves’ of agility within your business and enabling a stronger set of sustaining innovation outcomes.</p>
<p>This comes over time, from this need to have agility, flexibility, and an open enquiring mind that looks to experiment and explore, making for an agile innovator this needs diffusion across the entire organization and that does take time.</p>
<p>I’m always looking to explore agility and recently came across the concept of “collective agility”</p>
<p><strong>Then we have collective agility</strong></p>
<p>I have been reading a good academic paper recently, one that I came across in my Big Data and Cloud research I have been undertaking. The paper is called “Collective Agility, Paradox and Organisational Improvisation” by Yingqin Zheng, Will Venters and Tony Cornford found on the London School of Economics site, under the department of Management.</p>
<p>Their point gained from studying GridPP and its part in the Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (LHC) where they observed a collective, agile and distributed performance rather than seeing ‘agility’ as small-group and deliberate systems development practices often associated with ‘agile’.</p>
<p><strong>It got me curious. Here is my summary of their paper</strong>.</p>
<p>It certainly offers some pointers to managing in more agile ways in a complex and often disparate organization.</p>
<p><strong>Collective agility is focused on the same objective: shared.</strong><br />
In terms of business, it means the mission is shared by all and this mobilizes each person in ways that I feel are trying agility to innovation in new ways, well for me anyway.</p>
<p>It is providing an environment where “unintended consequences” emerge, many positive, others less so, where random thoughts and ideas collide and through these exchanges within the community they form a “collective mindfulness” to solve these complex challenges.</p>
<p>Collective agility seems to require a loose coupling, not heavy structures or rules, encouraging a culture of improvisation and constant ‘tinkering’ that comes from not just intelligence, trust and pragmatism but from the knowledge that lies within the community.</p>
<p>Collective agility needs to have minimal structure, flexible planning, extensive communication and social bonding, all working towards this coherent, facilitated and growing feeling of making good sense (sense-making) through this coordinated but distributed network.</p>
<p>It is totally reliant on the interactions and attention to coordination to achieve this ‘collective mindfulness’</p>
<p><strong>The big “ah-huh” for me</strong></p>
<p>Collective agility is about accepting what is unpredictable and uncontrollable yet working within given boundaries, actively working upon seeking out improving performance and capability, to still perform in these circumstances of uncertainty.</p>
<p>Now for me, many organizations are grappling with uncertainty, volatility and unpredictable situations and resort to trying to master them in rigorous, highly disciplined ways.</p>
<p>This collective agility is suggesting we go the other way, we let go, hang loose but stay collectively focused by just reacting in agile ways. Does that raise some different thinking for you, it does for me.</p>
<p>We are seeking out improved performance but in really agile ways across a distributed community or network. Large organizations today are regretfully still tackling thorny problems in ‘given silo’s’ and this ‘collective agility’ thinking might open up our ideas about collaborating and co-creating in different ways.</p>
<p>It is in the combining of performances, that tackle issues in improvised ways but within a trusted and pragmatic way. It creative productive tensions, dynamics and motivating challenges and the group feel that ‘capacity for action’, motivated to combine, share and explore together to solve the problem.</p>
<p>Rules, structures and organized events often inhibit and feel contrived, the idea behind ‘collective agility’ is it is more natural even within the organization with established routines and strong cultures as they can bind, provide collective strength, as well as inhibit. It is seeking out the minimal structures, releasing the flexibility and bonding that can come from these routines and stronger cultures.</p>
<p><strong>The when what, who, where and how collective agility is performed</strong></p>
<p>According to the authors, agility can be learnt through ‘learned improvisation’ where some established tools are dropped or removed and some ‘surprise, risk and wonder’ are allowed into the exchanges.</p>
<p>The atmosphere of experimentation, trust, shared goals and emotional bonds provide for confidence to grow, in sharing and learning from made mistakes, as it contributes to the ‘higher’ cause of what the community is tackling within these tough problems.</p>
<p>The group grows in its ‘sense of pride in working and searching for a higher cause and is even willing to undertake unpopular tasks to move exchanges along. The motivation grows through this collective agility.</p>
<p>We often recognize improvisation and agility are more easily performed in small groups, jazz improvisation is often used to relate to this agility. The key is often the ambience and this can equally come from building out bigger communities to perform and exchange (notes)</p>
<p>The final thought is agility requires a mental attitude “to let go of control” to interact, to improvise but to seek to keep that sense of cohesiveness of constantly wanting to work things out, working consciously to keep moving forward towards the higher task.</p>
<p><strong>Art and science fuse.</strong></p>
<p>The authors suggest science becomes more like an art- visionary, experiential, passionate, agile and emergent. I’ve written about art and science before, see here “<strong><a href="http://paul4innovating.com/2012/08/09/renaissance-comes-from-combining-art-and-science-for-innovation/">Renaissance comes from combining art and science for innovation</a>&#8220;,</strong> so I can relate to this need to bring these two often separate practices into one again.</p>
<p>As I was working through this paper, replaying the conceptualization of ‘collective agility’, I liked the comment within the paper “<em>agility for us is an expression of what people do or achieve, rather than what they might do or capabilities they hold</em>”</p>
<p><strong>Then another important part of this paper is managing the Paradoxes</strong><br />
They also bring out Paradoxes and provide a helpful table of these seemingly conflicting ideas or paradoxes to build ‘collective agility’ in understanding. These are based on:</p>
<p>1) <em><strong>The paradoxes of learning:</strong></em> “as we struggle between the comfort of the past and the uncertainty of the future which are fundamental to the process of innovation, transformation and sense-making”. <em>Learned improvisation and reflective spontaneity.</em></p>
<p>2) <em><strong>The paradoxes of organising:</strong></em> “reflecting tensions between control and flexibility, formal and informal, integrated and differentiation denoting an ongoing process of striving for an equilibrium of often opposing forces”. <em>Planned agility and structured chaos.</em></p>
<p>3)<em><strong> The paradoxes of belonging:</strong></em> “we strive for both self-expression and collective affiliation”…but also being “self-driven, intelligent and creative people, yet they also have an acute appreciation that success relies on collaborative effort”. <em>Collective individuality and anxious confidence.</em></p>
<p>They finish the paper by offering useful tables highlighting some key organizational practices that help to make this collective agility work through these paradoxes.</p>
<p><strong>We are constantly searching for agility to perform innovation</strong></p>
<p>Agility is linked to change. Change is constantly throwing obstacles in our way. We are urged to be nimble, to react quickly, and to tackle challenges in new ways. Developing agility allows us to be in a constant ‘state’ of recognizing nothing is seemingly staying the same.</p>
<p>If we are feeling those around us, are all working towards the same goals, then we feel less inhibited, we may not like change but we gradually accept it. If others are reinforcing the necessary change through this ‘collective agility’ it can become a source of new hope, new discoveries, and a place for opportunity, with real excitement, full of possibilities</p>
<p><strong>Gaining that critical sense of collective identity missing from many in our organizations.</strong></p>
<p>By knowing “we” are collectively all working towards the same purpose, constantly having the progress mutually reinforced, allowing for clear debate but being pushed and moving forward, being allowed to freely exchange within a common purpose in ‘collective’ ways, then we are certainly are moving towards a more fluid, organizational agility.</p>
<p>This collective agility might alter the ways we can tackle tough problems and work in volatile environments, which then can yield in collaborative ways, solutions that are more radical and breakthroughs in innovation, something we should all be striving to achieve.</p>
<p>Certainly, this does offer some interesting thoughts to take collaboration and co-creation further through this collective agility concept of greater improvising.<br />

<p> I wrote this in my last article and I thought some might ask “<em>what the heck does he mean by that?</em>” So I owe an explanation, perhaps partly to myself as well.</p>
<p>I’ve often heard and read that innovation is either an ‘art’ or a ‘science’ but we do seem it always struggle to combine them.  Why is that?</p>
<p>I finished that particular article (<a href="http://t.co/M7ILzFmS" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bit.ly/NlrOpV</a> ) with this:<br />
<em>“The art of innovation needs to be broken out of the science that needs to be applied, and then knowing its entire component parts then recombined in sustaining, thoughtful ways. We do need to harness the energy of innovation and we are not yet fully achieving that”.</em></p>
<p><strong>Let’s begin at the beginning when art and science were one</strong><span id="more-3815"></span><br />
The development about the preparation and properties of different materials went hand-in-hand with the development of the art of painting, pottery, metal-working in the 19<sup>th</sup> Century. Jonathan Ashley-Smith in his paper &#8220;Science and Art: Separated by a Common Language&#8221; does a far more extensive job of reflecting on this period but this is my &#8216;potted&#8217; summary.</p>
<p>This was the time of the ‘renaissance man’ where you sought out knowledge on the latest scientific discovery or the ones on art or exploration. We wanted to combine our knowledge. The 19th century was the time of wondrous discoveries; they needed to be pursued by all enquiring minds. A universal polymath.</p>
<p>It was later in that century we began to separate more than integrate. This specialization became fashionable. Schools, universities began to separate art and science to make it extremely difficult to study both simultaneously.</p>
<p>Science became governed by organization and rules, art allowed freedom of expression and to act more intuitively and the separation continued to be reinforced well into the 20th century.</p>
<p><strong>Science</strong> demonstrated truths, observable facts, was systematically classified and projected out that trustworthy view to us that discovering new truth (or new innovation) was clearly in this domain, we needed to strengthen this, we as society needed to reinforce it.</p>
<p><strong>Art</strong> became intensely personal, reflecting the ideas of the originator and the interpreter; it was not the same irreversible  force that science was becoming, for forging new paths, for generating wealth, health, new industries leading to prosperity.</p>
<p>Art began to take the back seat. We have had to wait until design became fashionable to &#8216;allow&#8217; it back into the business, less at arms length, late in this last century and more integrated in this one.</p>
<p>Specialisation was established in both the art and science field and over time became ‘culturally’ separated. We made choices on which served our needs and business clearly chose science. We all could have mutual comprehension and appreciation, that was understood but the two sides were separated even further.</p>
<p>This remained throughout the 20<sup>th</sup> century although each side grappled and often wanted to embrace the other, it struggled to find the real means to re-combine and achieve this, with some notable exceptions.</p>
<p><strong>Art and Science are the book ends for innovation</strong></p>
<p>I was reading an article about the great disconnects between Art and Science by Kristi Charish, and I loved the way she explained her thoughts, in particular: “art leads to scientific innovation and science inspires art.</p>
<p>Like a pair of book ends they work best in tandem and change the way we view the world. Without one you can’t have the other and there is a lot to celebrate in that!”</p>
<p><strong>So have we fast-forwarded so much?</strong></p>
<p>I think we still see art and science operating in different worlds, in different compartments and they often don’t combine as we would like. Yet she is right, they do prop up innovation but we do need to stop using them as the ‘book ends’ and bring them into the middle to combine more and more until they are &#8216;fused&#8217; as one. The very best, the breakthrough, the new discoveries happen when we combine in today’s world.</p>
<p>It is these ‘emerging’ fusion points of art, design, engineering, and science coming together and coalescing that are giving us great innovation. Art and design provide innovation with analogies and compelling stories, alternative structures, inspiring techniques, challenging methods and knowledge to push our boundaries and our minds.</p>
<p>It inspires us to then often push science, technology and engineering more and more to translate this. Just think of architecture of great buildings, pushing the boundaries of function and design with availability or the technology and design of the iPad or iPhone that pushed those boundaries of the accepted, and changed the norm for measuring the future.</p>
<p><strong>Divergence and convergence</strong></p>
<p>I use this divergence and convergence approach an awful lot. We build far too much on convergence without exploring divergence as much as we should. We promote convergence so we can execute things efficiently, effectively and as quickly as we can, we are rewarded by what we have completed. Yet the ‘art’ of divergence plays an equal role.</p>
<p>John Maeda of the Rhode Island School of Design  offered a good take on differences that make sound sense to me. Let me explain this in my way, partly borrowing.</p>
<p>Artists and designers are firstly divergent thinkers and make many uncomfortable, those often schooled in business and facts, that are impatient with achieving results but always from expected tangible positions.</p>
<p>We struggle with intangibles or theory. Artists and designers expand our horizons of possibilities and can make us &#8216;connect&#8217; far more, if we are prepared to let go and &#8216;see&#8217; alternatives.</p>
<p>It is this melding of divergence of designers and artists combining with our convergences of science and engineering that allow us to ‘find’ often that exceptional innovation that has combined all the disciplines or parts.</p>
<p>Art and design can give us less constraint and this provides often the vision for the factual minded to explore the realms of impossible to make it possible. Innovation always comes from a human starting point of observation or questioning. Art allows more for intuition, less on studying prediction, working in known rules.</p>
<p><strong>Modern art and modern physics</strong> have been combining, each providing to the ones ready to look and invest in the other, those multiple perspectives, those different dimensions of possibility to shift their thinking.</p>
<p><strong>So we need to rebuild and recombine</strong></p>
<p>Specialization has a place but has it been pushed too far? Often we hear that the world is &#8220;complex&#8221;, or the issues cannot be resolved by the best minds in the ‘given’ area, well we need a new way based on total knowledge. Piero Scaruffi offered his view in a talk on “Bridging the gap between Art and Science” at Swissnex, in San Francisco in 2007.</p>
<p>He remarked “<em>the digital age is providing us the opportunity to rebuild the continuum …has enabled an unprecedented degree of exchange, interaction, integration, convergence and blending”</em> Scaruffi suggests we are able to move out of the discrete spaces we have found ourselves in and finally recombine knowledge in new ways.</p>
<p>He argues we live in a context specific world that is based increasingly on knowledge-specific society, so different from the last time art and science came together in a knowledge-deprived society to offer this new continuum. Perhaps we are about to arrive at the age of the “<em>rinascimento l’innovazione</em>”, the innovation renaissance period.</p>
<p><strong>Why can Art and Science combine?</strong></p>
<p>Firstly all of what we do comes from us as humans as its starting point for innovation; it is linked to experiences and questioning. Every human activity is to some degree artist.</p>
<p>The problem we always face is that dogma rules, and in this case of science and art we do have a given mindset to keep separating whereas we should be combining in new and novel ways.</p>
<p>We have built up stereotypes and prejudices that need challenging. Science chases progress, Art really does not, it just looks to make change and it does this from evolving multiple perspectives. Sometimes, Science is often constrained by a far too linear approach and this needs somehow changing where we need to think in less rigid, structured ways today.</p>
<p>We are demanding, <em>no</em>, expecting, more in the future. Art and Science agree they are both forms of exploration, one explores the imaginary more and then this challenges and pushes the scientific and engineers to find the answers. They both change our reality and innovation should always be pushing our expectations that little bit more.</p>
<p><strong>Perhaps the ‘combining’ definition lies here?</strong></p>
<p>Amy Kelly wrote in her paper “Art-Science Connections: An investigation of creative innovation” for her thesis, proffered an all-encompassing definition of art and science, offered by one of the people she interviewed, that also helped me understand why art and science can be combined:</p>
<p><em>“ He then gave me his idea for a definition that both confirmed my original hunch and contradicted my original hypothesis, that art and science are essentially the same. </em></p>
<p><em>He said that there is “art” and there is “science” in the disciplines of both art and science. “Science” can be thought of as the mastery of concepts and skills; it is what stems from a strong sense of commitment during times of little inspiration. </em><br />
<em>Science is learning the rules, techniques, and methods of the activity a person is engaged in. </em></p>
<p><em>“Art,” on the other hand, happens after mastery of the science. It manifests itself when a person inserts his or her own creative will into the process, or “breaks the rules” in some way, allowing one to exceed normal limitations. </em></p>
<p><em>Art occurs when a person realizes that he can indeed bend rules in order to see things in a different light. Often, this may follow one’s entry into “the zone” which facilitates the creation of new, unique ideas. Art isn’t science or vice versa. </em></p>
<p><em>Art transcends science. When looking at art and science in this way, it is easy to understand that all scientists are not artists”</em></p>
<p><strong>“The art of innovation needs to be broken out of the science that needs to be applied”.</strong></p>
<p>We come back to my statement that needed explaining. Both art and science are integral, they, when they combine, help us understand the world we have and the world of possibilities we can aspire too.</p>
<p>We need both order and insight and it is these two book ends that when we bring them together, then often we have those ‘awe-inspiring, breath-taking, stunning, wonderful moments that transform our lives or the lives of others.</p>
<p>To quote Piero Scaruffi again: “<em>art and science cause a fundamental change in the nature of reality itself</em>”</p>
<p>As I said “<em>We do need to harness the energy of innovation and we are not yet fully achieving that” </em> embracing both art and science together will enable us to move from evolution to revolution, sometimes called enlightenment periods, as we need to meet some difficult challenges that cannot be incremental, but far more radical in their solutions and this requires cross disciplines to come together.</p>
<p>Let’s seek out growing &#8216;mutual comprehension&#8217; and harness the power of art and design, science and engineering and stop talking about them separately, shall we?</p>
