Did I achieve this weaving throughout the year?

I think I failed to convey these four threads consistently into my posts in 2024.

The first thread of this framework is the notion of value creation. It is the realization that these ecosystems were new factories of value, not just in terms of financial gain but in their profound impact on society and the environment. Each actor within the ecosystem, whether a business, a research institution, or a startup, contributed a unique piece to this intricate puzzle, crafting a beautiful tapestry of innovation from combining their endeavors to constantly seek out a different level of value creation.

The second thread, knowledge transfer, is like the lifeblood of these ecosystems. It is through the exchange of knowledge that innovation thrives. From universities to businesses and from research labs to government agencies, knowledge needs to flow like a constant river, nurturing the fertile soil of creativity, imaginations and push constantly for progress. It is not just about sharing information; it is about nurturing a culture of learning and discovery, by combining the talent and need for discovery .

Co-creation is the third element, a magical process where diverse actors came together like jigsaw puzzle pieces. They didn’t just share ideas; they wove them into innovative solutions. Design thinkers rubbed shoulders with entrepreneurs, and user feedback is cherished like gold as the window to open to allow ingenuity, originality and inventiveness to take hold. Co-creation is the heart of these ecosystems, where sparks of genius fly and innovation is born.

The fourth thread, competitive positioning, teaches us that thriving in this dynamic environment requires strategic thinking and new visions. Businesses, startups, and institutions had to constantly adapt and position themselves wisely. It becomes a dance where every move matters, and strategic partnerships become the secret to success in cooperation and competition, viewed in different perspectives of “coopetition”

We do need to constantly recognized that innovation is a highly collective endeavor; it always will be. It fosters collaboration between individuals, organizations, and institutions, creating a symphony of ideas that resonate far beyond the boundaries of any single actor.

The job@hand in 2025 is using these “golden” threads and turning my Integrated Business Ecosystem framework into a living, thriving one, where those who embrace the need to integrate, collaborate, and network are working in and embracing the power of dynamic, innovative ecosystems.

Conclusion What distinguishes an innovation ecosystem and makes it a must-have is its ability to create a highly interconnected, dynamic, and supportive environment where innovation can flourish.

It is finding the unique combinations that work for you. That unique combination of diverse knowledge, resource sharing, risk mitigation, market access, and a collaborative culture enables ecosystems to drive innovation more effectively than isolated efforts.

My definition of innovation ecosystems is that they are dynamic, interconnected networks of diverse actors and resources that come together to collaborate to drive innovation opportunity and create a more compelling value.

They are progressively replacing “just” innovation as this tends to be housed in one organization, to be developed and delivered on the resources and insights they have.

Innovation Ecosystems are richer due to this diversity, different knowledge and market intelligence that a broader group can bring into the creative thinking and market realization.

This interconnected community find ways to bring new ideas to market, built on their shared vision, having a collaborative and supportive environment to use, such as a shared platform, and able to reach out to a variety of resources that become accessible to all participants.

The key characteristics that give this the dynamics that are unique are

• Interdependence between partners

• Flows of knowledge, talent and capital otherwise not accessible

• Shared infrastructure and resources

• Building out a culture of collective experimentation and risk-taking.

Why is this thinking and designing in Innovation Ecosystems important today?

*It accelerate a more robust innovation through collaborations to unlock tougher challenges

*Enables access to diverse expertise and resources that give different insights and application to complex problems

*Helps organizations to adapt to rapid technological change in sharing and exchanging understanding of its value and positioning

We can measure innovation ecosystems differently in ecosystem growth, collaborations, engagements, contributions, shared knowledge creation, talent and skill exchanges, funding and investing and economic impact to encourage and drive decision-making and strategy evolution.

The future lies with Innovation Ecosystems

The future of innovation lies in recognizing this needs to be rooted in innovation ecosystems to tackle and offset globalization and competitive threats, manage in more geographically distributed ecosystems, offer more sustainable and social impact that are focused in collaborative settings.

Ecosystem design and thinking is able to address more complex customer needs and global challenges, leverage technology advancements, and recognize that more fluid set of boundaries between organizations is blurring or simply vanishing far quicker today.

The need is to understand the different practices, collaborative challenges and cultivation points that diversity, trust and openness bring to this shift. My initial advice is simply “stop trying to control everything yourself”

Innovation Ecosystems is an iterative process, like innovation within one organization, it requires patience, flexibility, being highly adaptive and firmly committed to long lasting collaborative relationships that come over time, trust and growing success.

Designing a Composable Innovation Framework

During May and June 2023, I worked through and concluded my thinking on why we needed to change our Innovation approach. A radical change from far to often a linear one, into a new, more up-to-date, and dynamic solution for managing innovation.

This solution recognises that innovation discovery all the way through to implementation is now so often non-linear and that is causing plenty of problems connecting all the understandings fully up in one manageable place

I have called this the Composable Innovation Framework– here is why and what went into this proposal that I feel should be adopted for managing innovation in the future.

As the investigation, validation, and viewpoints were built up over numerous posts I am summarising the series here

We need to shift our innovative thinking from static to dynamic.

These are the critical reasons we need a radical change in our innovation approaches

1. We have been in very static, traditional approaches to innovation, very segmented and often insular. As so often happens in innovation, it has complexities that seemingly grow and require multiple changes. There are far more rapid changes in the business landscape and our current innovation process often breaks down as it struggles to adjust and adapt to new data, validation and thinking. The ability to regain control across the whole development to delivery lifecycle is time consuming and resource intensive, mistakes happen, updates are missed or misunderstood and the end result is less that optimum.
2. We need systems and processes that are flexible, adaptable, and can enable continuous improvements but are fully connected, transparent, and integrated across the entire business. We need to approach innovation differently through connected agility, have speed and automation more central, and provide roles for a great diverse set of participants.
3. We need a system that encourages forming strategic alliances, partnerships, and knowledge sharing to drive innovation and create shared value in open, thoughtful, and collaborative ways. This is where technology enables these connections and triggers different thinking in the quest for moving toward more extraordinary valuable solutions—the “connected” value of behaviours thinking ecosystems and operating on collaborative platforms.
4. We need to encourage highly collaborative environments and organisations can consistently leverage the collective intelligence of many, find and draw in a variety and diverse set of resources, both inside and outside the organisation, and access different expertise all working within the same ecosystem and platform configuration.

This comes through the power of innovation ecosystem thinking

The principles of this Composable Innovation Framework are the recognition and value of having a building block and innovation stack design.

These blocks and stacks that house the fundamental thinking through elements and capabilities required and enable the interconnected layers of process, technologies, and resources to leverage and support the innovation efforts from concept to commercialisation and beyond on sustainable approaches.

The shift to platform thinking gives the potential for scalable and flexible foundations for collaboration, integration, and value creation. The platform enables organisations to connect different stakeholders, leverage external resources and facilitate the exchange of ideas and solutions.

We need a radically different comprehensive innovation system solution.

Innovation design does need a comprehensive solution to address the complexities of modern innovation. You gain the ability to integrate the principles of dynamic thinking, ecosystem collaboration, building block, and innovation stack thinking in their approaches where technology plays an essential role, and the foundations of a platform design to enable organisations and the individuals involved to navigate challenges and seize the opportunities in a more robust and vigorous innovation management approach.

The Composable Innovation Enterprise framework aims to overcome the limitations of current traditional approaches to innovation (software) design. It focuses on collaboration, interconnectedness, and shared value creation within an innovation ecosystem.

This encourages a significant shift in mindset, culture, and potential within software solutions. It allows organisations to dynamically assemble (and reassemble) and reconfigure their innovation processes and resources constantly to adapt to the knowledge and discovery of innovation as it reveals itself in new insights and potential.

The beauty is that it is designed on a platform that scales, allows scope and flexibility, collaboration and diversity of thought, and encourages speed in knowledge exchanges and activities from its technology design.

Open up your CEO’s innovating thinking to make the jump

Innovation must rely increasingly on interconnected organizations organized around a central focal point of value and impact. An ecosystem design should be in thought and design so that organizations can act differently on strategies, business models, leadership, and customer engagement to build new value and worth.

If we fail to recognize that innovation is vital to our business, to sustain it, and to enable it to grow, we eventually die. Today, more than ever, it is becoming an evolving collective endeavour. Increasingly, we are faced with growing complexities and challenges to resolve.

We need to foster collaboration between individuals, organizations, and institutions, creating a symphony of ideas that resonate far beyond the boundaries of any single actor.

I recommend thinking around innovation ecosystems as this has many advantages;

1. Greater access to a broader range of resources and expertise through the bringing together of a diverse set of organizations that can bring together technologies and customer insights from different perspectives. Also drawing in different resources not usually available to one organization offers a more significant potential to innovate more effectively, in choice, options, shared thinking and risk.
2. Increased collaborations and co-creation through innovation ecosystems can foster the more significant potential for collaborations and co-creations between associated parties that can “trigger” innovations that feed from these growing cooperations forming between the parties.
3. Greater scalability and speed. By leveraging the resources and capabilities of other organizations, the potential to scale the innovation efforts in new ways, across different channels, not open to one organization. It provides different levels of speed from the established one existing in the single organisation and capitalizes on the diversity of different reputations the partners have built up in their respective markets.
4. Greater flexibility and adaptability in different, more collective and imaginative ways. Multiple alerts to market changes, conditions and customers’ needs can stimulate a growing adaptability and solution design, more modular or progressive in response.
5. Greater potential for sustainability and social impact. Innovation ecosystems increasingly need to be designed to offer more sustainable and socially responsible solutions. Having partners who manage different parts of the lifecycle can create opportunities in designing redundancy and ease of replacement that extends and expands a product’s solution, giving an ongoing positive impact while achieving reoccurring business success.

So why do open innovation strategies have real potential to take innovation into business ecosystems? The CEO needs to understand innovation ecosystems:

• Expand Innovation Horizons:
  • Rationale: Open Innovation Strategies broaden the scope of innovation by tapping into diverse external sources. This expansion enhances the potential for breakthrough ideas and disruptive innovations.
• Leverage External Expertise:
  • Rationale: Embracing external collaborators, whether individuals or organizations, brings diverse expertise. This collective knowledge enhances problem-solving capabilities and fosters creative solutions.
• Accelerate Time-to-Market:
  • Rationale: Open Innovation allows for faster access to new technologies and ideas. By leveraging external resources, companies can reduce time-to-market for innovative products and services.
• Enhance Competitiveness:
  • Rationale: Staying ahead in the competitive landscape requires constant innovation. Open Innovation Strategies provide a competitive edge by harnessing external intelligence and staying attuned to industry trends.
• Adaptability and Resilience:
  • Rationale: In a rapidly changing business environment, organizations must be adaptable. Open Innovation fosters adaptability by facilitating access to a diverse pool of external resources that can help navigate uncertainties.

Open collaboration must be at the forefront of the CEO’s mind when opening up to innovation ecosystems.

Innovation must rely increasingly on interconnected organizations organized around a central focal point of value and impact. An ecosystem design so organizations can act differently on strategies, business models, leadership, and customer engagement to build new value and worth.

The result has the potential to be so much better than the sum of all the existing parts, often siloed and not connected up—it magnifies the sum significantly!

Thinking Partner Ecosystems in design and delivery. There is a need to resolve immediate, mid-term, and long-term issues to show progressive thinking on how to grow collaboratively. How to collaborate to deliver impact, and create value when building your thinking in products, services, or new business models on any Partner Ecosystem design and thinking. One methodology stands out for me: the three-horizon framework

Partner ecosystems are highly valuable for delivering on these ambitions. Partner Ecosystems enable you to go beyond addressing immediate and surface-level issues to tackle deeper, systemic challenges and position clients at the forefront of collaborative and co-creative approaches.

In my view, this requires a progressive mindset that considers growth, impact, and value across various time horizons. This mindset lends itself really well to applying the three-horizon methodology.

The concept of three-horizon modelling, which considers short-term resolutions, mid-term growth, and long-term impact and value creation, is particularly relevant in this context.

Immediate Needs / Short-Term Resolutions (Horizon 1):

• Partner ecosystems should address immediate challenges and resolve pressing issues, such as supply chain disruptions, resource shortages, or regulatory changes and compliance.

• However, these short-term solutions should be designed with a broader vision in mind, laying the foundation for more sustainable and scalable approaches in the future.

• The searching for underlying root causes or systemic issues that need to be recognized and addressed later as partner ecosystems can develop short-term solutions that address the immediate problem and lay the foundation for more sustainable and long-term solutions.

• Collaborations within the ecosystem should prioritize knowledge sharing and data transparency, enabling a deeper understanding of the power of openly collaborating and sharing insights,

Mid-term Strategies / Growth (Horizon 2):

• Partner ecosystems should focus on mid-term strategies that enable growth, innovation, and competitive advantage. This involves co-creating new products, services, or business models that leverage the collective expertise and resources of the ecosystem partners.
• Building on the insights from short-term collaborations, partner ecosystems should drive growth and innovation by co-creating new products, services, or business models that significantly increase competitive advantage.
• By extracting and exploiting ecosystem partners’ collective expertise, resources, and diverse perspectives to anticipate and respond to evolving market trends, customer needs, and technological advancements more effectively.
• Mid-term strategies should also consider the potential impact on various stakeholders, including employees, communities, and the environment, ensuring responsible and sustainable growth.

Long-term Vision, Impact and New Value Creation (Horizon 3):

• Partner ecosystems should develop a long-term vision that transcends immediate commercial interests and addresses broader societal and environmental challenges, often contributing to underlying causes.

• Initiatives on this horizon should focus on broader areas of concern and contribution to solving, such as climate change mitigation, social equality, public health, and sustainable development, ultimately contributing to preserving human life and well-being. This involves collaborating with diverse stakeholders, such as academia, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and local communities, to co-create solutions that have a lasting positive impact.

• By co-creating solutions with a positive and lasting impact, partner ecosystems can position themselves as leaders in their respective industries and contribute to creating a better future for all.

Recognize we need to “cut through” different issues over different time horizons

• To truly “cut through the issues” and position clients ahead in their thinking, partner ecosystems must embrace a holistic and progressive approach that addresses immediate needs while simultaneously working towards mid-term strategies and a long-term vision. This requires open communication, trust, and a shared commitment to collaboration and co-creation among all partners.

• By fostering an ecosystem that values growth, impact, and value across different time horizons, organizations can address current challenges, shape the future of their industries, and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world.

The value of the three-horizon approach

By adopting a three-horizon approach, partner ecosystems can simultaneously address immediate needs, drive growth and innovation, and create lasting impact and value. This progressive mindset requires a holistic understanding of the interconnectedness of challenges, a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation, and a shared sense of purpose among all ecosystem partners.

This approach recognizes that tackling systemic challenges requires a long-term perspective and a willingness to embrace complexity. It acknowledges that short-term solutions alone are insufficient and that true transformation necessitates a multi-faceted approach considering various time horizons and stakeholder needs.

The power of this Partner Ecosystem approach is that you recognize that in each time horizon, it considers growth, impact, and value across partner thinking and contributions. It breaks down complexity from the diversity of opinions and ideas. The recognition of cause, effect, and systemic issues catalyze the thinking. They provide this collaborative effect, bringing collective intelligence.

I have have been looking back at innovation and how it has changed over the last twenty-five years. In a series of three posts, I have asked Google’s Gemini to answer five questions to track and trace the progress innovation has made and where it seems to be heading.

This is the second post looking more at collaboration and idealization and how and what has helped it evolve in this period. Hopefully, this change has enabled better value creation and learning how to innovate. (First post here)

So this post, in a series of three, looks at the answers given by Google’s Gemini on how collaboration and ideation evolved the organization’s ability to adapt and what helped.

My first question here to Gemini was: “Collaboration, Ideation, Implementation and Value Creation have also changed since 2019- how and what has driven this?“

The reply: “Here are some of the ways in which collaboration, ideation, implementation, and value creation have changed since 2019:

Collaboration

This focus on value is driving innovation by ensuring that new solutions address real-world problems and have a positive impact.
• From short-term to long-term: The time horizon for innovation is expanding. Organizations are investing in long-term innovation initiatives, recognizing that the most transformative ideas take time to develop and mature. This long-term perspective is driving innovation by enabling organizations to develop breakthrough solutions.
• From linear to ecosystem-based: The value created by innovation is now distributed across the entire ecosystem. Organizations are collaborating with partners and stakeholders to share the benefits of innovation, creating a more equitable and sustainable approach. These changes in collaboration, ideation, implementation, and value creation are fueling a new era of innovation. Organizations that can adapt to these changes and become more open, agile, and collaborative will be well-positioned to succeed in a rapidly changing world.

My second question relating to collaborating over these last 25 years was “How are Organizations adapting differently to these changes so as to become more open, agile, and collaborative? Has the methodology changed? Have the tools differed or is it the acceleration of technology connecting it all up?

Organizations are adapting to the changing landscape of innovation by adopting new methodologies, tools, and technologies. These changes are enabling them to become more open, agile, and collaborative, which is essential for success in today’s fast-paced and interconnected world.

Methodologies

• Agile methodologies: Organizations are increasingly adopting agile methodologies, such as Scrum and Kanban, to manage their innovation processes. These methodologies emphasize iterative development, continuous testing, and customer feedback, allowing organizations to adapt to changing requirements and market conditions quickly.
• Design thinking: Design thinking is another methodology that is gaining traction in innovation. This human-centred approach emphasizes understanding user needs and behaviours, rapid prototyping, and iterative refinement. It helps organizations create products and services that truly resonate with their customers.
• Lean startup: Lean startup is a methodology that helps organizations validate their ideas early and often. By focusing on rapid experimentation and learning, lean startup enables organizations to identify and eliminate waste, reduce risk, and increase the likelihood of success.

Tools

• Cloud-based collaboration tools: Cloud-based collaboration tools, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Asana, are enabling organizations to collaborate more effectively across geographical boundaries and time zones. Over three posts I wanted to look back at innovation and how it has evolved from 1999 to 2024, a period of twenty-five years.

I asked Google Gemini five questions. In my first post, I asked what the main aspects of innovation thinking and design changed from 1999 to 2019. This post looked at how collaboration and ideation evolved, the organization’s ability to adapt, and what helped.

The third post, coming next, looked at the emergence of ecosystems and platforms and began to gaze more into the future of innovation and from this I began to speculate how it will radically change with the fast rise of AI creating disruption and different opportunities. Are we really ready in our structure, system architecture or mindset to be so open, collaborative and willing to co-create? I personally don’t think so.
