<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This perspective shifts the focus from isolated efforts to a more interconnected and dynamic approach where multiple stakeholders—such as businesses, governments, academic institutions, entrepreneurs, and consumers—work together to drive innovation.</p>

The idea is that innovation is rarely the result of a single entity&#8217;s efforts; rather, it emerges from the interplay of different players with complementary resources and capabilities.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Co-evolution:</strong><br>o In an innovation ecosystem, all participants co-evolve. As one participant innovates or changes, others in the ecosystem must adapt, leading to a continuous cycle of innovation. This dynamic process allows for the emergence of new ideas, products, and services that might not have been possible in a more static environment.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Resource Sharing and Synergy:</strong><br>o Ecosystems allow for the pooling and sharing of resources, whether they are knowledge, technologies, or financial assets. In a series of three posts, I have asked <a href="https://gemini.google.com/" title="Google's Gemini"><strong>Google&#8217;s Gemini</strong></a> to answer five questions to track and trace the progress innovation has made and where it seems to be heading.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the second post looking more at collaboration and idealization and how and what has helped it evolve in this period. Hopefully, this change has enabled better value creation and learning how to innovate. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">So this post, in a series of three, looks at the answers given by Google&#8217;s Gemini on how collaboration and ideation evolved the organization&#8217;s ability to adapt and what helped.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The reply: &#8220;Here are some of the ways in which collaboration, ideation, implementation, and value creation have changed since 2019:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Collaboration</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>From siloed to interconnected:</strong> Collaboration is no longer confined to departments or companies. Instead, it is happening across the entire innovation ecosystem, including startups, research institutions, and even customers. This interconnectedness is driving innovation by bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise.</li>



<li class=""><strong>From linear to iterative:</strong> Collaboration is no longer a one-way street. Ideas and feedback are flowing back and forth throughout the innovation process. This iterative approach is driving innovation by ensuring that solutions are aligned with user needs and market realities.</li>



<li class=""><strong>From hierarchical to horizontal:</strong> Collaboration is now less hierarchical and more egalitarian. Leaders are not the only ones who have ideas. Everyone in the innovation process can contribute, regardless of their position or role. This inclusivity is driving innovation by tapping into the collective creativity of the entire organization.</li>

<li class=""><strong>From siloed to integrated:</strong> Implementation is now more integrated across different functions and teams. This integration is driving innovation by ensuring that new ideas are seamlessly integrated into the organization&#8217;s overall operations.</li>



<li class=""><strong>From linear to iterative:</strong> Implementation is now an iterative process, not a one-time event. Organizations are using rapid prototyping and continuous testing to refine and improve new products and services as they are being implemented. This iterative approach is driving innovation by ensuring that new solutions are meeting user needs and market requirements.</li>

<li class=""><strong>From product-centric to value-centric:</strong> The focus of innovation is shifting from creating products to creating value. Organizations are now creating value for customers, partners, and society as a whole. Organizations are investing in long-term innovation initiatives, recognizing that the most transformative ideas take time to develop and mature. This long-term perspective is driving innovation by enabling organizations to develop breakthrough solutions.</li>



<li class=""><strong>From linear to ecosystem-based:</strong> The value created by innovation is now distributed across the entire ecosystem. Organizations are collaborating with partners and stakeholders to share the benefits of innovation, creating a more equitable and sustainable approach. <h5 class="wp-block-heading">My second question relating to collaborating over these last 25 years was &#8220;How are Organizations adapting differently to these changes so as to become more open, agile, and collaborative? Has<strong><em> the methodology changed? Have the tools differed or is it the acceleration of technology connecting it all up?</em></strong></h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Organizations are adapting to the changing landscape of innovation by adopting new methodologies, tools, and technologies. These changes are enabling them to become more open, agile, and collaborative, which is essential for success in today&#8217;s fast-paced and interconnected world.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Methodologies</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Agile methodologies:</strong> Organizations are increasingly adopting agile methodologies, such as Scrum and Kanban, to manage their innovation processes. These methodologies emphasize iterative development, continuous testing, and customer feedback, allowing organizations to adapt to changing requirements and market conditions quickly.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Design thinking:</strong> Design thinking is another methodology that is gaining traction in innovation. This human-centred approach emphasizes understanding user needs and behaviours, rapid prototyping, and iterative refinement. It helps organizations create products and services that truly resonate with their customers.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Lean startup:</strong> Lean startup is a methodology that helps organizations validate their ideas early and often. By focusing on rapid experimentation and learning, lean startup enables organizations to identify and eliminate waste, reduce risk, and increase the likelihood of success.</li>
</ul>

<li class=""><strong>Prototyping tools:</strong> Prototyping tools, such as Sketch, Figma, and Balsamiq, are making it easier for organizations to create and iterate on prototypes of their products and services. These tools enable teams to visualize and test their ideas early in the development process, identify potential problems, and make improvements before investing significant resources in development.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Data analytics tools:</strong> Data analytics tools are providing organizations with insights into customer behaviour, market trends, and competitor activities. These insights are helping organizations make informed decisions about their innovation strategies, such as which ideas to pursue and how to allocate resources.</li>
</ul>

<li class=""><strong>Internet of Things (IoT):</strong> The IoT is connecting devices and systems in real time, creating a wealth of data that can be used to inform innovation. For example, IoT data can be used to track customer behaviour, optimize supply chains, and develop new products and services.</li>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Summing up this question</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;By adopting these new methodologies, tools, and technologies, organizations have been taking steps to become more open, agile, and collaborative. These changes are helping them to innovate faster, create better products and services, and build stronger relationships with their customers and partners&#8221;</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Over three posts I wanted to look back at innovation and how it has evolved from 1999 to 2024, a period of twenty-five years. </h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I asked Google Gemini five questions. In my first post, I asked what the main aspects of innovation thinking and design changed from 1999 to 2019. This post looked at how collaboration and ideation evolved, the organization&#8217;s ability to adapt, and what helped. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The third post, coming next, looked at the emergence of ecosystems and platforms and began to gaze more into the future of innovation and from this I began to speculate how it will radically change with the fast rise of AI creating disruption and different opportunities. Are we really ready in our structure, system architecture or mindset to be so open, collaborative and willing to co-create? I personally don&#8217;t think so.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I decided to hold a conversation with <a href="https://gemini.google.com/" title="Google's Gemini"><strong>Google&#8217;s Gemini</strong></a> about how innovation had changed and hopefully progressed since I first became involved 25 years ago, when I lived in Singapore and was heavily involved in my MBA, which had innovation as an elective.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The MBA elective &#8220;hooked&#8221; me on innovation, and here I am 25 years later, still going on about innovation, championing, cajoling and encouraging innovation to be more central, disciplined and structured.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So I have taken the educational looking back from Gemini lense of perspective and broken this into three parts. I find it interesting and reaffirming. This is the first of these posts looking at the development, thinking and design of innovation from 1999 to today 2024, twenty-five years. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Innovation can be both highly frustrating and rewarding. It is good to gain a real sense of progress in these past 25 years; otherwise, where have I been?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I often feel innovation has not advanced in these past twenty-odd years, but having all the changes nicely summarized here makes me feel there has been a shape and purpose to be so actively involved in the evolution of innovation over these 25 years and been part of that evolution.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Firstly, this post</strong> outlines how innovation has evolved<strong> since 1999</strong> and does a further recheck for <strong>2019</strong> until today. So, it covers a twenty-five-year period but recognizes that the last five years have seen a very different set of innovation accelerants.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The second post</strong>, coming next, focuses on how organizations have become more collaborative, open and agile and deal with ideation and what tools and technologies seem to have emerged as the leading ones.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The third post</strong> following, is where I see it heading: into Ecosystems and Platforms to drive innovation performance. I see this collaborative and co-creation of innovation will be in business ecosystem partnerships, and I wanted to &#8220;validate&#8221; this, with a little bias thrown in!</p>

<li class=""><strong>Businesses need to be inclusive.</strong> An inclusive ecosystem is more likely to attract and retain top talent.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"> Dynamic ecosystems can accelerate and leverage growth, shape strategies, and significantly contribute to the role of platforms in different ways. The recognition of &#8220;dynamic capabilities&#8221; is essential. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Dynamic Ecosystems are of the higher Ecosystem Order</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dynamic Ecosystems, for me, are in the &#8220;higher order&#8221; of any <strong>Hierarchy of Ecosystem Needs</strong> as they are constantly evolving, learning and adapting by seeking out (novel) characteristics in unpredictable ways. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For this to be heightened, you need to attract and form a dynamic resilience network, as most ecosystems often seek stability to extract their value; dynamic ecosystems must transcend beyond the existing boundaries, whereas innovation ecosystems and business ecosystems are constantly pushing the boundaries out. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have provided <a href="https://ecosystems4innovating.com/a-journey-in-achieving-a-dynamic-innovation-ecosystem/" title="a structured journey in achieving a Dynamic Innovation Ecosystem">a structured journey in achieving a Dynamic Innovation Ecosystem</a>, and this has value in extending your thinking about the design of Ecosystems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The big step is by recognizing <strong>the hierarchy of ecosystem needs, </strong>you recognize interconnectedness but establish distinct characteristics between the needs of each ecosystem and its contributions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Moving towards the Hierarchy of Ecosystem Needs is my next step</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I move towards my &#8220;<strong>Hierarchy of Ecosystem Needs</strong>&#8220;, offering an integrated system of ecosystems, I believe we can unlock many of the complexities and challenges we face today.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My next few posts will be building the case of this Hierarchy of Ecosystem Needs in how it enables organizations to achieve a paradigm shift towards interconnected, adaptive and prosperous new ways of ecosystem-centric approaches to deal more effectively with the modern and future business landscape. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To get to a good understanding of cross-sector innovation ecosystems collaborations, you need to take a very considered holistic view of what is needed in any collaboration, let alone cutting across sectors to generate a successful outcome. All the elements of skills, processes, tools, capabilities, and behaviors are essential in supporting an effective collaboration across sectors that need to be involved.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have summarized the key points of these four posts; <em>click on the links referred to</em>.  I have outlined the multiple needs to consider so you are more aware of the differences and needs of managing within an ecosystem of collaborators.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/04/04/cross-sector-innovation-ecosystem-collaborations/"><strong>My first post</strong></a> outlined differences in cross-sector collaborations that need more profound assessments of where to focus and understand.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The post discusses the importance of cross-sector innovation collaborations (CSIC) in today&#8217;s open innovation hubs and ecosystem management. This emphasizes that many challenges have become too complex to tackle alone or even in a single industry. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Collaborating in cross-sector consortia with diverse partners can provide the potential for improved operational productivity, shared application development, and skill enhancements. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The post outlines 11 essential skills, processes, tools, capabilities, and behaviors that are unique to cross-sector innovation collaborations, including interdisciplinary skills, co-creation processes, innovation tools and methodologies, collaboration capabilities, outcome orientation, flexible and adaptive behaviors, cultural sensitivity and awareness, resource sharing, risk management, governance and accountability, and continuous learning and improvement. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I conclude that CSIC is crucial to tackling highly complex challenges requiring a well-organized, coordinated, collaborative resolution.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this post, I discussed</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We need to recognize there are specific skills and tools required for cross-sector innovation ecosystem collaborations.  Cross-sector collaborations are becoming essential for tackling highly complex issues that require collaborative resolution. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The post lists the unique skill set required for cross-sector collaboration, including interdisciplinary thinking, communication and collaboration, creativity and innovation, adaptability and flexibility, project management, cultural competence, strategic thinking, cultural differences, intellectual property, governance, funding and resources, measurement and evaluation, regulatory compliance, and communication and engagement. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, I identified specific tools required for cross-sector innovation collaborations, including project management software, virtual collaboration tools, knowledge management systems, innovation management software, intellectual property management tools, cultural competence training, and data analytics and visualization tools.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/04/11/approaching-cross-sector-innovation-ecosystem-collaborations/"><strong>The third post</strong></a> assessed the design and focused on the different understandings within partners that must be addressed to build a shared understanding and way to work. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The third post in this series on cross-sector innovation ecosystem collaborations discusses the design of effective collaboration. The post identifies several stages involved in creating a successful cross-sector innovation ecosystem collaboration, including defining the problem, identifying potential partners, building relationships and trust, defining roles and responsibilities, developing a co-creation process, and implementing and evaluating the collaboration.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"> The post also highlights the importance of understanding the unique needs of all involved and designing collaborations accordingly, considering common goals, recognizing and respecting different perspectives, creating a shared language, transparency, and accountability, managing intellectual property rights, and fostering a culture of innovation. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The post finishes by emphasizing the need for a nuanced and flexible approach that recognizes the unique needs and characteristics of the public and private sectors.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The </strong><a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/04/13/achieving-engagement-outcomes-from-cross-sector-innovation-ecosystem-collaborations/"><strong>final fourth post</strong></a> is about the appeal, interest, growing engagement, and judging outcomes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This final post of the four-part series on cross-sector innovation ecosystem collaborations, emphasizes the importance of building interest and engagement by creating a compelling value proposition for potential collaborators. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The narrative and how it is built is vitally important. The narrative should identify shared goals and priorities, showcase successful collaborations, emphasize the unique strengths and resources that each sector brings to the table, create a collaborative and co-creation culture, establish clear roles and responsibilities, provide support and resources, foster transparency and inclusivity, measure and communicate impact, and emphasize how collaboration can create mutual benefit and value.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Collaborations can come in different names, such as co-creation, partnership innovation, systems innovation, collective impact, and convergent innovation, depending on the target audience and the values and priorities that resonate with them. The choice of name should communicate the value and potential of cross-sector innovation collaboration clearly and compellingly.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, the success of a cross-sector innovation collaboration can be judged based on its impact, scalability, sustainability, and the creation of mutual benefit and value for all parties involved.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>My view here is summed up as follows.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cross-sector collaborations are partnerships between entities from different sectors, such as government, private sector, academia, and civil society. These collaborations can be powerful tools to address complex challenges that cannot be solved by any one sector alone.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are some key points to consider when summarizing cross-sector collaborations:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list" type="1">
<li><strong>The benefits of cross-sector collaborations</strong>: Collaborating across sectors can bring together diverse perspectives, expertise, and resources to create innovative solutions that can have a lasting impact. Some benefits include increased efficiency and effectiveness, greater community engagement, and improved stakeholder outcomes.</li>



<li><strong>The challenges of cross-sector collaborations</strong>: While they offer many benefits, they can also be challenging to establish and maintain. Power imbalances, conflicting goals, and communication barriers can hinder progress and make collaboration difficult. Overcoming these challenges requires strong leadership, effective communication, and a shared commitment to the goals of the collaboration.</li>



<li><strong>Examples of successful cross-sector collabo</strong>rations: There are many examples, from public-private partnerships in infrastructure development to community-led initiatives to address social issues. Key factors contributing to successful collaborations include clear goals and objectives, mutual trust and respect, and a willingness to learn and adapt.</li>



<li><strong>Best practices for cross-sector collaborations</strong>: It is essential to follow best practices or leading practices to maximize the benefits of cross-sector collaborations. These include establishing clear roles and responsibilities, fostering open and honest communication, and creating mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation. Ensuring the collaboration is inclusive and engaging all relevant stakeholders is also essential.</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In summary, cross-sector collaborations can be powerful approaches for addressing complex challenges. While they can be challenging to establish and maintain, following best practices and learning from successful examples can help ensure success. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise, cross-sector collaborations can create innovative solutions that can have a lasting impact on communities and society as a whole.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my view any new approach to innovation needs to aim to achieve interdependent and interlocking innovation, solving problems that have not been addressed before and offering sustainable value, impact, and returns to all involved or <em>significantly</em> improving on the existing solutions. Today we are missing a comprehensive structure or innovation process to achieve this, we need a radically different approach to managing innovation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I am suggesting a vertical and horizontal design applying innovation stack and building block approaches, all “housed” on a technology platform. This post explains this thinking, and validation and provides the way I envisage this. </p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Nothing can work in isolation. </strong></h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We need an Innovation Mandate calling for a Radical Re-design of how we undertake innovation management, it is needed to bring innovation management into the 21st century in design and approaches.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I believe today; the innovation management process requires this <em><strong>fresh mandate</strong></em> to drive change to bring the process into today&#8217;s more technical period where our systems need to operate seamlessly and flow across the organization and the entire innovation process.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Are we leveraging fully what is available to us to build better innovation concepts?</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Are we leveraging <strong><em>Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning</em></strong> enough from the explosion of data to identify patterns and insights leading to emerging concept creation? Are we really leveraging the <em><strong>Digital Transformation</strong></em>, turning innovation concepts that aim to streamline business processes, improve efficiencies, reduce latency, and capitalize on the richness of available technologies to offer the potential to create new business models? Have we allowed <strong><em>Customer co-creation to become more co-jointly involved in innovation</em></strong>, gaining insights into customers&#8217; deeper needs and preferences? </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, we have not <strong><em>leveraged open innovation</em></strong> to its next level by leveraging digital technologies, social media, or the richness we can deploy from our networks and connections to give a greater diversity on a platform approach where customers, partners, and suppliers. We have the capacity through technology and human interactions for them to come together, exchange, and <strong><em>increase and accelerate</em></strong> innovative concept value.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">So why did I name this &#8220;A composable innovation enterprise framework<strong>?</strong></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Firstly from a general business perspective, the term &#8220;composable&#8221; implies a way of thinking and organizing that emphasizes flexibility, adaptability, and modularity. It involves breaking down complex systems, processes, or strategies into smaller, independent components that can be assembled, reconfigured, and combined in various ways to meet specific business needs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Composable thinking encourages businesses to view their operations as a collection of modular building blocks or capabilities that can be flexibly arranged and rearranged. It shifts the focus from rigid, monolithic structures to a more fluid and dynamic approach that allows for rapid adaptation and customization.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Specifically composable innovation can be explained<strong> </strong></h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Composable innovation in my mind approaches the innovation processes and systems in a specific way, designed to be this modular, flexible, and adaptable in thinking and approach. It draws inspiration from the concept of composable architecture in technology, where systems are built using independent, reusable components that can be combined and orchestrated to create customized solutions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the context of innovation, composable thinking involves breaking down the innovation process into smaller, modular components or building blocks. These components can include different methodologies, tools, technologies, and resources that can be flexibly combined and reconfigured to meet specific innovation needs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Composable innovation enables organizations to rapidly assemble and reconfigure innovation capabilities based on changing requirements and emerging opportunities. It emphasizes the ability to leverage and combine existing resources, knowledge, and technologies in novel ways to drive innovation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By adopting a composable approach, organizations can achieve greater agility, adaptability, and scalability in their innovation efforts. They can more effectively respond to market dynamics, experiment with new ideas, and integrate diverse perspectives and inputs into the innovation process.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Overall, </strong>composable innovation promotes a modular and flexible mindset in managing and orchestrating innovation activities, enabling organizations to leverage their existing assets and adapt to the evolving needs of the business landscape.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Composable thinking encourages a more flexible, adaptable, and collaborative approach to problem-solving, innovation, and resource management. It empowers organizations to build and optimize their capabilities in a way that aligns with their specific goals and changing market dynamics<strong>.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I believe we need to leverage technology, concepts, and design thinking. I propose a radically different system architecture for managing innovation designed and leveraging all the value of technology approaches. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Organizations can create a more comprehensive and effective innovation ecosystem by utilizing building blocks as components of the innovation stack, guiding platform development using the innovation stack, and supporting the innovation stack with a platform. Equally, components are oriented towards learning, knowledge, creativity, design, and testing—essential tasks in the innovation process.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The makeup of the  basic design of the Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Innovation Stacks become the core, and the building blocks explore and exploit the essential elements.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The innovation stack consists of modular, shared, and persistent elements that are repeatable and proven in their contribution value. Developing any new concept requires recognizing its specific elements of required knowledge, operational requirements, and our future world, plugging into the human-AI collaboration.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Stack building comprises two parts, the horizontal layers, and the vertical components.</h4>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Horizontal Layer: Building Block contributing to the different Innovation Stacks</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The vertical layer represents a suggested building block of innovation stacks that combines various approaches discussed previously. There are delivering <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/05/09/recognizing-the-building-blocks-of-innovation/" title="multiple building blocks"><strong>multiple building block</strong></a>s, many already available, and these would be loaded down from a Marketplace of components and modular blocks. I have not listed all of the possibilities here.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&nbsp;It comprises the following layers:</p>

<li><strong>Discovery Layer:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Building Blocks</strong>: Market Pull assessment, Technology Push potential, Challenge Defining, Vision, and Goal alignment.</li>



<li><strong>Platform Components</strong>: Exploratory tools, Front End Management Software, Environmental Scanning, Trend Management, Start-Up Scouting, Weak Signals, Academic Research, Radar, IP Scanning, Three Horizons, and Strategic Roadmaps.</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>Idea Concept Layer:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Building Blocks</strong>: Ideation sessions, customer research, market analysis, trend analysis, competitive analysis, whiteboard exploring, idea box, crowd science and sourcing, double diamond assessment.</li>



<li><strong>Platform Components</strong>: Idea management software, online communities, social media listening tools, collective intelligence, corporate venturing, and design thinking.</li>

<li><strong>Problem Validation Layer</strong>:

<li><strong>Building Blocks</strong>: Design thinking, Agile methodology, MVP development, feature prioritization, testing, experimentation, and iteration.</li>



<li><strong>Platform Components</strong>: Collaboration software, project management tools, tracking and roadmaps, Agile development tools, and Design Thinking Methodologies.</li>

<li><strong>Business Model Design Layer</strong>:

<li><strong>Building Blocks</strong>: Value proposition development, revenue model design, pricing strategy, cost analysis, and market positioning.</li>



<li><strong>Platform Components</strong>: Business model canvas software, financial modeling tools, and pricing strategy software.</li>

<li><strong>Execution Layer:</strong>

<li><strong>Building Blocks</strong>: Go-to-market strategy, launch planning, marketing and promotion, sales enablement, and customer support.</li>



<li><strong>Platform Components</strong>: Marketing automation software, CRM systems, customer support software, and sales enablement tools.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By combining these building blocks into a modular building block of innovation stacks, organizations can create a customized approach to innovation that aligns with their specific needs and goals. The platform components offer pre-built tools and resources that accelerate the innovation process, while the building blocks provide a structured approach to ensure effective execution at each step.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I plan to extend this out with another layer of the <strong>Circular Lifecycle</strong> in the near future. I have shown it within the design but I have not worked through this as sufficiently as I would have liked at this time.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Vertical Layer: Achieving the Final Perspective, the innovation stack gets validated by the team.</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The horizontal layer comprises the learning components that provide the structured learning and thinking through process focuses built through this vertical and horizontal taxonomy and framework. It involves the following elements of the process to follow in the innovation process:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Made up of finding <strong>opportunity spaces </strong>and <strong>potential scenarios</strong>.</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>Learn:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Gather &amp; Probe</strong> handling unstructured content, classifying relevance, searching, and filtering.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li><strong>Synthesize:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Looking for<strong> patterns and model dynamics</strong> from data, structuring, and inquiry (AI) to simulate.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li><strong>Create:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Forming</strong> connections and <strong>maturing</strong> the association&#8217;s system dimension needs, network engagements, deepening understanding, architecture framing, impact, and implication.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li><strong>Decide</strong>:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Evaluate and select</strong> options based on fitness, portfolio needs, velocity, and overcoming cognitive biases.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li><strong>Communal:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Understanding and informing</strong> through social interactions, attributing, designing, adapting, projecting future value and impact, coherence with existing systems, identifying changes and their implications, and using metaphors for identification.</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I plan to add another element of<strong> Sustainability</strong>, both social and corporate value, later as I have not worked on this as much at this time but have included it here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This framework requires integration, coherence, collaboration, and interactivity to achieve its objectives in a team environment, all having access to the same knowledge and insights; one of the essential reasons this has to be on a technology platform for a comprehensive, transparent, communication and full access for all involved.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my learning components, the vertical elements I gained from a suggested one provided by Larry Schmitt, but my solution has a much broader framework of learning needs of the contribution value of the building blocks &#8216;feeding&#8217; each of the innovation stacks both in horizontal and vertical components, due to this comprehensive approach.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Identifying the key components and relationships of innovation stacks and building blocks is crucial for developing a comprehensive and effective innovation ecosystem. By leveraging the tools, frameworks, and mechanisms provided by the marketplace and platform components to build the innovation stacks, organizations can create an ecosystem that fosters a culture of innovation, accelerates the innovation process, enhances collaboration, leverages diverse perspectives, and drives competitive advantage.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Feasibility and Considerations</h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Implementing the building block and innovation stack concept is feasible through available platforms and components that offer varying degrees of modularity. However, it requires careful planning, resource allocation, and significant innovation commitment to its enablement. There is a need to consider the following factors as it challenges much of the established and requires growing validation of its value and future impact:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list" type="1" start="1">
<li><strong>Resource Allocation</strong>: resource investment, development, and time</li>



<li><strong>Integration with Existing Corporate Operating Systems</strong>: aiming for a seamless integration</li>



<li><strong>Cultural Alignment</strong>: experimentation, risk-taking, support, and encouragement on seeing the value</li>



<li><strong>Implementation Challenges:</strong> building blocks and innovation stacks have challenges in complex processes </li>



<li><strong>Considering the Practical Implementation &amp; Scalability</strong>: requires staging and managing</li>



<li><strong>Integrating technology and software thinking</strong>: will need adaptability and agility</li>



<li><strong>Transforming the current systems and processes into a new architecture</strong>: planning, resources, and adaptation</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A design like this does align with the goals of leveraging technologies and design thinking to drive innovation, and arguably bring innovation management into the 21st century but its further exploration, experimentation, and evaluation are clearly necessary to determine its radical potential and practicality across many different organizational contexts to realize the greater potential</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The proposed design becomes far more of an innovation ecosystem design suited to responding to today&#8217;s challenges and complexities where broader collaboration is becoming essential. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">So in summary </h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In summary, implementing a building block and innovation stack design is feasible but requires careful planning, resource allocation, investment, and a solid commitment to innovation. The benefits include a structured and efficient innovation process, enhanced collaboration, and leveraging pre-built modules and tools for accelerated innovation. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We formulate an integrated design based upon a vertical and horizontal approach 1) using building blocks as components of the innovation stack, 2) using the innovation stack to guide platform and learning development, 3) using the platform to support the innovation stack modular design, 4) enabling the building, adding and deploying new applications and services as applicable and recognized as needed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What do you feel? Does this approach have a radical potential for changing the current innovation management systems and bringing this into the 21st century in technology enablement and software thinking? I believe it indeed does. We need a radical reset of innovation to solve our future challenges and all the complexity of these, collaborating across organizations and institutions together.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I started posting my thoughts on innovation in August 2010. I have written on this site alone, www.paul4innovating.com, by just coming up to a milestone of 700 posts focusing on innovation thoughts and opinions, so I just wanted to pause and think about all the different places I have tried to get the innovation message(s) out.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I always find the post-New Year to be a reflective part of the year of reviewing, deciding, and then setting new goals. This is a post about the sources of my knowledge that feeds my innovation passion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let me start. I often wonder whether the posts and articles I&#8217;ve written have been hitting the right buttons, helping solve the needs of those involved in innovation; I hope so. I have pushed out and explored various aspects, learning myself as I go. I have followed a number of great innovation thinkers and read different books on the areas of innovation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It amazes me. How much is talked about, advice offered and sometimes that deep down nagging feeling, innovation understanding does not really change; it is the people managing it as they often seem to be simply passing through this innovation period onto other things or vanishing in pursuit of different career interests.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"> During this time, I have adopted and sometimes improved many innovative tools and methodologies or simply explored all the different ways to look at and investigate innovation. Reading and even contributing to different innovation books that have come out has added experience and contribution, but I do so often wonder that innovation seems not to have changed as much as I would have expected. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Innovation application and practice seem to have stayed stuck, largely due to how it is organized. The software has been increasingly proven and improved, mostly at the front end of the innovation process,but the whole innovation process or system stays in pockets of disconnected knowledge and fails to fully leverage the collaborative potential, insights or experiences of all involved if the innovation discovers to commercialization was open and supported by a clear ecosystem approach and strong, dedicated platform and technology-enabled environment.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even with all the countless advice, ideas and concepts written by many, innovators still stay marooned on individual islands, lacking insights, alternative opinions and broader diversity in thinking. I wonder if innovation management has made the level of progress or remains still a little steeped in mystery and the big &#8220;big ah-huh&#8221; moment, often so vital to breakthrough innovation. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How can you just trigger multiple &#8220;ah-huh&#8221; moments? Having those insights are the wonderful moments of magic, and they still hold such power over our innovative thinking, sometimes unfairly judging our innovation process as &#8220;ad hoc&#8221;, but we must not deny us all to find ways to open up to a different way of innovation management through open, collaborative innovation engagement. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For me, it is necessary to grasp what Ecosystem thinking, and Platform design can do through all the connected technology and human collaboration this approach can provide. This is my primary focal point today.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I have doubled down on innovation</strong> <strong>more to prompt others.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">More specifically, in my investigative travels, I developed a number of my own tools, frameworks or methodologies, or in numerous collaborations, especially with<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffreyphillips-innovation/" title=" Jeffrey Philips"> Jeffrey Phillips</a>, a great sparring partner, the dialogues and exchanges have produced some good framing tools (in my opinion). Jeffrey has been writing articles and posts since 2005 and can be a great source of inspiration at <a href="https://innovateonpurpose.blogspot.com/" title="Innovate on Purpose">Innovate on Purpose</a>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Equally, if you go to my dedicated page where I keep many of my tools and methodologies for easy reference here in this posting site <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/insights-thinking/" title="insights and thinking">insights and thinking</a>, you get a fair amount of knowledge, collections and insights pulled together on this one tag or page. You can &#8220;search&#8221; on keywords and see what comes up.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have with pride been constantly quoted, referenced or acknowledged as an innovative thinker and shaper, appearing for ten out of the last twelve years in the <em>top 40 innovation bloggers</em>, run and collated by <a href="https://bradenkelley.com/" title="Braden Kelley">Braden Kelley</a>, who focuses today on <a href="https://bradenkelley.com/2021/10/free-human-centered-innovation-tools/" title="Human-Centred Change and Innovation">Human-Centred Change and Innovation</a> with a lot of good, helpful tools on his website.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the academic side, I have been referenced 94 times in different papers, especially at <a href="https://www.academia.edu/upgrade?feature=name_mentions&amp;trigger=mentioning-author-rw" title="Academia.edu. ">Academia.edu. </a> I have written for numerous organizations tailoring innovation to their specifics, be that Energy, Digital, Industrial and Software related on different length contracts commissioned. I like to equally contribute to different innovation practice references such as <a href="https://thefutureshapers.com/" title="">Future Shapers</a>, occasionally <a href="https://www.thedigitaltransformationpeople.com/" title="Digital Transformation People">Digital Transformation People</a> run by <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/timellisdigitaltransformation/" title="Tim Ellis">Tim Ellis</a> and consistently for <a href="https://www.businessinnovationbrief.com/" title="BusinessInnovationBrief">BusinessInnovationBrief</a>. I constantly feature posts or articles on LinkedIn and Medium as well. For my Energy Transition work, focusing on where innovation fits, I contribute to <a href="https://energycentral.com/" title="Energy Central">Energy Central</a>, which has around 200,000 global power industry professionals visiting the site.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I run different innovation-related posting sites for my own innovation thinking</strong>, as innovation remains my core. I need to break out different parts of it to better focus a reader&#8217;s mind <strong>(and my own!) </strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I decided to try and separate my innovative thinking into more focused activities such as Ecosystems, the Energy transition, the Future of Work, Digital Technology, and of course, Innovation, so I can offer choice, greater depth or find a more selective place to write or clarify aspects of my work. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This one of <strong><a href="https://paul4innovating.com/" title="paul4innovating.com">paul4innovating.com</a>,</strong> my core site, then one focusing specifically on ecosystems and platforms at <a href="https://ecosystems4innovating.com/" title="ecosystems4innovation.com"><strong>ecosystems4innovation.com</strong></a>, one for where innovation fits within the energy transition over at<a href="https://innovating4energy.com/" title=" innovating4energy.com"> <strong>innovating4energy.com</strong></a> where we are undergoing a transition in all of our lives.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have two business advisory offerings, <a href="https://agilityinnovation.com/" title="agilityinnovation.com"><strong>agilityinnovation.com</strong></a>, my main business offering that looks to find value creation, growth and impact from the advisory, coaching and mentoring work and <a href="https://hocaconsulting.com/" title="hocaconsulting.com">hocaconsulting.com</a>, more for the future of work or in my specific focus of work-to-be-done.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lastly, I wanted to have (simple) reference sites to delve into quickly; these are <strong><a href="https://thinking4innovators.com/" title="thinking4innovator">thinking4innovator</a>s,</strong> my advocating coaching and guiding site of<a href="https://guide4innovating.wordpress.com/" title=" Guide4innovating.wordpress.com"> <strong>Guide4innovating.wordpress.com</strong></a> and a final one that focuses on the dynamics of <a href="https://innovationfitnessdynamics.wordpress.com/" title="">i<strong>nnovationfitnessdynamics.wordpress.com</strong></a> which clarifies where individual, groups or organizations are positioned on the innovation landscape for capabilities, capacities and competences. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"> <strong>I see myself as <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2013/08/29/the-innovation-journeyman/">an innovation journeyman</a>, learning and sharing.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I simply enjoy innovation in all its forms. I got ‘hooked’ twenty-plus years ago. I work as a transition advocate and advisor for innovation, and ecosystems, focusing today more on those massive transformations being undertaken across the energy system and industry 4.0, requiring radical changes, new designs and innovative solutions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I relate content to context to give greater knowledge and build the transition narratives we are all undergoing. For this, I love the notion of <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2015/04/15/walkabouts-are-needed-for-learning-and-testing-ourselves/">walkabouts for learning and testing ourselves.</a></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The value and insights come from researching much of the need for innovation; in society, businesses and institutions need to constantly look to develop novel innovation solutions and frameworks that add new value.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>My primary role is advising, mentoring and coaching within these areas</strong> <strong>of innovation needs.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For me,<strong><em> innovation needs to enter</em></strong> <em><strong>the DNA</strong> <strong>of our organizations</strong></em> and our own individual makeup. What I do is deliberately set out to help grow and extend the body of knowledge on innovation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have taken this pathway or learning journey around innovation as it fascinates me. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Why have I written this?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Well, It is not just my journey but yours to share and gain from. The sharing of knowledge and insights provided for others to gain makes this dedicated focus worthwhile and keeps me ticking along in business advisory, coaching and mentoring around innovation when asked for advice or engaged in work on a client&#8217;s behalf.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have worked on the formula <strong>SCA = II + OC + EE + MLC + RNE</strong> for many years.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In that post, I detail the make-up of the formula, made up of the combination of positive relationships between the following interrelated parts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We are or need to be, in search of a sustainable future where we can constantly build upon innovation capabilities, capacities and competencies that can be refreshed, strengthened and sometimes reduced to meet the circumstances.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The formula <strong>SCA = II + OC + EE + MLC + RNE</strong> makes sense to me. How you build out these yourself further adds more uniqueness and source of advantage.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Seeking out a working Sustainable Competitive Advantage (SCA)</strong><br></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What do you want to achieve from selecting the expected SCA&nbsp; outcome choices? What do you need to frame as the SCA by using the parts of the formula? By asking a bunch of questions</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>The extent of market advantage (posses distinctive advantage) to be achieved or believed needed.</li>



<li>Competitor’s difficulties in duplicating this, where the unique advantage is often found</li>



<li>Strategic leadership is prevalent and nurturing, and valued- what are ours?</li>



<li>Understanding “superior” marketplace position (in revenue and cost advantage)- define this</li>



<li>Creating it, capturing it and keeping it distinctive needs constantly checking and validating</li>



<li>Facilitating, accelerating and sustaining the diffusion process across the organization is a constant.</li>



<li>How do you seek relative advantage, achieve compatibility, reduce complexity, encourage trial,-build out the ability and ensure observability can be determined?</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Brief background and some thoughts</strong><br>On the first take all this seems to be a long list. Actually, this is offered on purpose. You add your own distinct needs within this formula but don&#8217;t dismiss any suggestions offered here without ‘good cause’.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The challenge is how you see it, and how you value its ability to connect context and the content or aspects you want to focus upon. With these structures or building blocks, you can start individually adding your unique “flesh to the bone”.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let this become an innovation capability formula that stays in your head. You constantly ‘walk around’ its parts to get an increasing connection and momentum to build its value from others needing to relate to what is important to building sustaining capabilities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I got the original idea of this framework many years back by reading through some different thoughts that JayWeerawasdena had put together in some assorted papers. These assorted ideas and concepts partly fueled my idea that led to this ‘combining’ concept of mine, published here.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I feel we need to provide a framework that can be worked in ways that build your unique capabilities. By focusing on these key components that do tend to make-up innovation that leads to sustaining ongoing competitive advantage, you can frame and measure activity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In October, for example, I wrote, &#8220;<a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2022/10/09/why-do-we-need-to-change-our-thinking-about-innovation/" title="">Why do we need to change our thinking about innovation</a>&#8220;. I continue here with some more arguments of &#8220;why&#8221; we need to move towards an innovation ecosystem in design and thinking.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I continue to gather, reflect and construct the &#8220;how and what&#8221; structure of this redesigned innovation (ecosystem) process/system. This will be my initial view of how this needs to be shaped as the overriding architecture of an Innovation Ecosystem. I&#8217;m coming closer to the point of sharing this in the coming weeks.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I am focusing here on arguing for changing our innovation process on the  Business-to-Business or Industry-to-industry, not the retail or consumer ecosystems and their designs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Let us first provide the top view of the difference in need and the offer of new values.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Where there is a complex challenge that one business cannot provide a solution to, innovating through ecosystems makes absolute sense. These are complex challenges where high levels of collaboration, knowledge exchange and discovery are essential. The understanding leading to new innovative solutions needs to be connected up, more transparent and collaborative. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For instance, many of the Energy transformation solutions we are undertaking would highly benefit from a sharing and exchange environment due to the complexity, high research costs and islands of knowledge existing today that all are moving at a low pace- the low-risk rate in research, discovery and piloting as they are still these islands of restricted knowledge and limited resources.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">New solutions, being often highly experimental, come at significant investment costs. Today we wait for Government to kick start these investments, but they still stay locked far too often into single providers and grants. We have such urgency with the energy transformation we MUST change the model; it needs to be highly collaborative, learning and sharing.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Narrow focuses, singular approaches and resources or a better way to broaden and accelerate innovative solutions. This can apply to Energy, Health, Environment, Water, Reinsurance and Industry-related areas, for example.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take a practical example; <a href="https://innovating4energy.com/getting-concerned-for-hydrogen/" title="">Hydrogen</a> is the solution carrier for clean energy. Electrolyzers and <a href="https://innovating4energy.com/tension-bottlenecks-and-concerns-within-the-hydrogen-transformation/" title="">the broader Hydrogen</a> debate do provide the means to produce the product that is this clean energy carrier to replace fossil fuels. EACH hydrogen solution is currently being pursued in individual companies or limited geographical or technology areas. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We can&#8217;t afford to keep waiting; we need to find the best solution and invest in massive scaling. We talk of this, but innovation has still not completed the investigation or solution design job. We have far too many options that stop the market from wanting to invest; they do not want experimental solutions; they want the finished one that is proven.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This sort of debate, in finding innovative solutions that transform what we have in place for so many current inhibitors in agriculture production, in critical supplies of heat, water and industrial applications that replace existing energy-intensive and natural resource dependency, needs breakthrough innovations, not incremental solutions that maintain the existing depleting position. We need to be radical in design and thinking</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Ecosystems accelerate learning, sharing and knowledge.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Coming back to the argument for innovation ecosystems. The dynamics (within) innovation discovery and implementation are changing; the global scale is transforming much. For us to react with a more robust end-to-end innovation system, we need a better conceptual framework to be understood and built.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This designed innovation ecosystem needs to be knowledge-based and grounded in AI and Human intelligence sharing; it needs to have as part of it the dynamics for constant and continuous interactions, it requires knowledge-driven events and a process that triggers and prompts as central to it.</p>
