<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Combining Ecosystems, technology and GenAI to unlock innovation</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The concepts of ecosystem innovation and generative AI has arrived at the point where we need to question workflows have the real poential openness has become central to our process of thinking and development building. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Innovation does need reinventing as a discovery process. Radically different ways of capturing, extracting, and delivering value are emerging. Adopting <a href="https://ecosystems4innovating.com/seeing-innovation-differently-through-ecosystem-thinking-and-design/" title="ecosystem thinking and design">ecosystem thinking and design</a>, combined with Generative AI, has the impact of augmenting, automating, and rapidly scaling innovation in significantly different ways than ever before.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In one of my posts, &#8220;<a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/11/10/embrace-ai-driven-innovation-it-is-the-future/" title="Embrace AI-driven innovation; it is the future"><strong>Embrace AI-driven innovation; it is the future</strong></a>,&#8221; I looked specifically at how the (traditional) innovation management process will change. The deployment of AI-driven thinking utterly alters my perspective of “delivering” innovation.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">New Areas of Accelerating Innovation Discovery.</h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, how do we undertake this need to think through and recognize a new innovative way of discovery.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thinking through any engagement process, one that is required to break through traditional innovation processes needs to break down the new areas of discovery.</p>



<ol start="1" class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Scenario Selection:</strong> Identifying and selecting the right scenarios is crucial, especially where ecosystem engagement and the use of generative AI can be central. The first critical step is understanding an organization’s goals and challenges and determining where Generative AI thinking and Ecosystem partnering can be most beneficial.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Ecosystem Establishment:</strong> It is essential to create the necessary infrastructure and environment to support AI-driven innovation. This might involve assembling the right team, procuring the needed technology, and ensuring data availability. It is also essential to reach outside the organization to relate and understand what this can mean.</li>



<li class=""><strong>AI Initial Investigative Work:</strong> Before diving into full-scale AI generative thinking, preliminary research and development becomes necessary. This includes understanding the capabilities and limitations of AI models, data preprocessing, and initial model training relating to potentials and constraints and evaluating differences between “go it alone” or in collaborations and then in what form and means.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Innovation Concept Application:</strong> Once you have gained a growing understanding of the value of AI models and brought this into any forward-thinking, you can use them to generate innovative ideas and solutions to “fuse” into your idea creation capabilities.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Verification and Validation:</strong> It’s critical to validate the generated ideas to ensure they align with your organization’s goals, are technically feasible, and have real-world applicability. This step involves testing and refining the concepts. This step may involve iterative processes of idea generation, refinement, evaluation, and real-life testing and prototyping. This is to gain growing “comfort” on what this new combination of taking this out in AI-driven ecosystem thinking can bring. This needs to be purposefully built, compared and validated.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Learning Plan:</strong> Continuous learning is essential in evaluating ecosystem AI-driven innovation. This step involves creating a plan to gather feedback, analyze the outcomes, and adapt your AI generative thinking process for ongoing improvement. It also involves evaluating and deciding what can be built “in-house” and what needs to be partnered.</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Some additional considerations that need care when thinking through radical change around external data and GenAI thinking :</em></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Data Quality:</strong> High-quality data is fundamental for AI generative thinking. Ensure your data sources are reliable, diverse, and representative of the problem you aim to solve.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Ethical and Responsible AI:</strong> Incorporate ethical considerations into your AI generative thinking process to avoid biases and ensure responsible AI use.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Human-AI Collaboration:</strong> Leverage AI to augment human creativity rather than replace it. Encourage collaboration between AI and human experts.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Scaling and Integration:</strong> As you see success in your initial deployments, plan for how to scale AI generative thinking across your organization and integrate it with existing processes.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Feedback Loops:</strong> Establish feedback loops with stakeholders, users, and the AI system itself to refine and improve the generative thinking process over time.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Regulatory Compliance:</strong> Be aware of any regulatory requirements or industry-specific standards that may apply to your AI-driven innovation projects.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I do believe the principles of design thinking, agile development, ecosystem thinking and design coupled with AI integration offer a radically exciting new innovation approach. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">While ecosystem-based approaches offer numerous advantages, there are also challenges and potential barriers that organizations may face. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As I was building out <a href="https://ecosystems4innovating.com/navigating-the-new-introduction-to-the-hierarchy-of-ecosystems/#more-6411" title="the Hierarchy of Ecosystem Needs"><strong>the Hierarchy of Business Ecosystem Needs</strong></a>, you have to consider many of the (current) issues and challenges being faced by advancing Ecosystem thinking and design. <a href="https://ecosystems4innovating.com/the-business-case-for-the-hierarchy-of-ecosystem-needs/" title="The business case"><strong>The business case</strong></a> adds more value and needs to think more about the impact of ecosystems in highly connected ways.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I believe in building the foundation layer, the Innovation Ecosystem pushes the &#8220;grey cells&#8221; and gives the best platform for integrating a comprehensive Ecosystem framework in my proposal, which comprises an Innovation Ecosystem, a Business Ecosystem, a Dynamic Ecosystem and the Enterprise Ecosystem. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The question of barriers and issues must be addressed</strong> to comprehensively understand the values of synergies, interdependencies and the exponential value created when these Business Ecosystem layers I am proposing in my <a href="https://ecosystems4innovating.com/navigating-the-new-introduction-to-the-hierarchy-of-ecosystems/#more-6411" title="Hierarchy framework">Hierarchy framework</a> are interconnected. Constructing an interconnected business ecosystem framework is undoubtedly &#8220;no walk in the park&#8221;; it is hard work.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have been outlining <a href="https://ecosystems4innovating.com/the-business-case-for-the-hierarchy-of-ecosystem-needs/" title="the initial case">the initial case</a> for this Business Ecosystem Hierarchy, offering the potential for the transformative power of collaborative ecosystems together that, over a series of posts, will provide this initially connected narrative and then provide individual ecosystem layer posts covering innovation, business, dynamics and enterprise-building ecosystems. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Getting the thinking going and not putting you off, let me offer these thoughts for resolving issues and barriers so that you can address the implementation of an ecosystem-designed approach.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Here are some issues and barriers associated with implementing an ecosystem-designed approach:</h5>

<li class=""><strong>Coordination Challenges:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><em>Issue:</em> Coordinating diverse entities within an ecosystem can be complex. Ensuring alignment and effective collaboration among participants with different goals and priorities can be challenging.</li>



<li class=""><em>Barrier:</em> Lack of effective coordination mechanisms and communication channels may hinder seamless collaboration, impacting the overall success of the ecosystem.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li class=""><strong>Trust and Collaboration:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><em>Issue:</em> Establishing trust among ecosystem participants is critical. Differing levels of trust can impact the willingness of organizations to collaborate openly and share resources or information.</li>



<li class=""><em>Barrier:</em> Building and maintaining trust may take time, and concerns about data security, intellectual property, or competition could impede collaboration.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li class=""><strong>Resource Allocation:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><em>Issue:</em> Allocating resources, including time, talent, and financial investments, can be challenging, especially when organizations within the ecosystem have varying capacities and commitment levels.</li>



<li class=""><em>Barrier:</em> Limited resources, competing priorities, and differing levels of commitment from participants may pose challenges to achieving shared goals.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li class=""><strong>Innovation Coherence:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><em>Issue:</em> Ensuring that innovation efforts align with the dynamic needs of the ecosystem requires a deep understanding of each participant&#8217;s capabilities and strategic objectives.</li>



<li class=""><em>Barrier:</em> Lack of clarity or misalignment in innovation strategies among ecosystem participants may hinder the coherence and impact of innovation initiatives.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li class=""><strong>Regulatory and Compliance Issues:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><em>Issue:</em> Ecosystems often operate within regulatory frameworks varying across industries and regions. Navigating these regulations and ensuring compliance can be a complex task.</li>



<li class=""><em>Barrier:</em> Legal and regulatory barriers may limit the speed and flexibility with which organizations can collaborate, share data, or engage in certain activities within the ecosystem.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li class=""><strong>Resistance to Change:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><em>Issue:</em> Organizations may face internal resistance to adopting an ecosystem approach. Traditional structures and processes may need to be adapted, and there could be resistance to change from employees or leadership.</li>



<li class=""><em>Barrier:</em> Overcoming resistance to new ways of working and ensuring a cultural shift toward collaboration may require significant organizational change management efforts.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li class=""><strong>Lack of Common Standards:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><em>Issue:</em> Inconsistent standards or interoperability challenges may arise, mainly when dealing with diverse technologies, data formats, or operating procedures among ecosystem participants.</li>



<li class=""><em>Barrier:</em> Establishing common standards and ensuring interoperability can be a complex task, impacting the smooth functioning of the ecosystem.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li class=""><strong>Dependency Risks:</strong>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><em>Issue:</em> Overreliance on a few key players within the ecosystem can create dependency risks. If a critical participant faces challenges or exits the ecosystem, it may impact the entire network.</li>



<li class=""><em>Barrier:</em> Mitigating dependency risks requires careful diversification and contingency planning, ensuring the ecosystem remains resilient to potential disruptions.</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Addressing these issues and barriers requires a thoughtful and strategic approach, including robust governance structures, clear communication channels, and a commitment to building trust and collaboration among ecosystem participants. </p>

It is a journey of building innovation, fitness and dynamics found within innovation ecosystems. We actively shape these journeys, building adaptability, agility and innovation for long-term success in the changing business environment we all face today.</p>

A landscape and the navigation skills that provide the adaptability and agility needed for successful innovation in the current business landscape.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After a series of posts introducing and explaining the thinking and design behind the Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework, I thought it would be a good idea to put this into a sequence of visuals that should take you through this to provide a decent understanding of its make-up and logic.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Organizations in today’s business environment need to adapt rapidly and dynamically, have the need to bring the innovation management process into a constant technological advancement, and be more tailored in its design by their own specific needs and not “offered” as a rigid set of solutions. We need to embrace a significant change in the way we “set about” innovation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The importance here is recognizing the shift in mindset and thinking towards a Building Block approach to build up the Innovation Stacks. Each stack “sits” on a technology platform. Thinking through what this means requires understanding, relating, and putting a clear context of innovation, what you want to achieve, and how to set about this.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>The core concept is made up of Building Blocks, Modular Innovation Stacks, Learning Components, and Platform Architecture offering a MarketPlace and Technology Platform as its foundation.</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Firstly what makes up the Building Blocks that assemble and form the Modular Innovation Stacks</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is a Discovery layer, Idea or Concept layer, Problem Validation layer, Solution Development layer, Business Model Design layer, and finally the Execution layer</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This follows the &#8220;accepted&#8221; logic of how the innovation flows. Each has many established ways to break down the layer, in assessing it as well as the platform components that are recognized as framing tools for that stage. These are held within the Marketplace to download an API of that frame, tool, or technique on the platform provided.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em><strong>The Learning Components are how we should work through each stage of the innovation process. I view this learning</strong> <strong>structure as important to work through in each stage of the Discovery to Execution</strong></em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These learning components work through <strong><em>foresight</em></strong>, then how we<em><strong> learn, synthesize, create, decide,</strong></em> and then set about convincing others of the value and benefits of this innovative concept, <strong><em>the communal &#8220;buy-in&#8221;.</em></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is not offered as a “big bang” solution; it should be phased, and taken step by step. Any enterprise-enabled framework will require serious change management to understand build-up validation, the level of returns, and the growing understanding of cost/ benefit conversion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Embracing a <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/06/12/the-final-perspective-a-composable-innovation-enterprise-framework/">Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework</a> will undoubtedly involve a significant shift in mindset and processes, which could raise concerns about complexity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The final Composable Innovation Enterprise framework</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my view by embracing a <strong>Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework</strong>, organizations can overcome the limitations of traditional approaches and leverage the power of collaboration, interconnectedness, and shared value creation within an innovation ecosystem. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This framework encourages a shift in mindset, culture, and software solutions, allowing organizations to dynamically assemble and reconfigure their innovation processes and resources.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my view any modern approach to innovation needs to aim to achieve interdependent and interlocking innovation, solving problems that have <em>not</em> been addressed before and offering sustainable value, impact, and returns to all involved or <em>significantly</em> improving on the existing solutions. Today we are missing a comprehensive structure or innovation process to achieve this, we need a radically different approach to managing innovation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I am suggesting a radical rethink of how we set about innovation. </strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We need a comprehensive enterprise solution that &#8216;carries&#8217; innovation across and outside the organization for seeking the best in concepts and ideas to final execution. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I believe this vertical and horizontal design thinking in applying innovation stack and building block approaches, all “housed” on a technology platform &#8216;brings&#8217; innovation and its management process into a central and eventually core part of the organization&#8217;s management of its business.; highly collaborative, adaptable, fluid, and modular to deal with complex challenges that require different thinking on a constantly evolving basis.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"> In a series of posts, I have first explained <strong><a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/05/03/are-we-ever-going-to-embrace-innovation/">why we should change</a>,</strong> then introduced the concepts of <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/05/09/recognizing-the-building-blocks-of-innovation/"><strong>the building block</strong></a>s, followed by an introduction to the<a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/05/19/building-the-innovation-stack/"> </a><strong><a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/05/19/building-the-innovation-stack/">innovation stack thinking</a></strong>. this was followed by the critical relationships of Stacks and Blocks, then bringing these concepts into a perspective based on platforms that leads to the offering of a <strong><a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/06/12/the-final-perspective-a-composable-innovation-enterprise-framework/">final perspective of this Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework</a></strong> ( the announcement post)   <p>Post announcement, I have been following this up with posts on <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/06/14/building-up-to-the-composable-innovation-enterprise-framework-validation/"><strong>building up a validation plan</strong></a>, with the <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/06/16/the-potential-returns-of-the-composable-innovation-enterprise-framework/"><strong>potential value of adopting this framework</strong></a> approach with an opening sketch of offering suggestions to beginning to think about <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/06/19/the-implementation-of-the-composable-innovation-enterprise-framework/" title="an implementation plan"><strong>an implementation plan</strong></a> and within this series this final post, the <strong><a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/06/21/the-planning-out-of-this-composable-innovation-enterprise-framework/">phasing and sequencing suggestions</a></strong> and who needs to be involved.</p> </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Collectively these prove the building kit for considering, justifying, and explaining this new innovation proposal.</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Here, we are looking at a sequence of steps to work through and build experience and understanding.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I outline here the approach I would take as sequence steps from 1 to 8</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Undertaking the initial structure, design, and framing of a Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework typically involves a collaborative effort involving various organizational stakeholders. Here are some key roles that could contribute to this process that become the stakeholders:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list" type="1" start="1">
<li><strong>Innovation Champions and Enthusiasts:</strong> These individuals play a crucial role in championing the need for change and driving the adoption of the framework. They can be senior executives, innovation managers, or individuals with a deep understanding of innovation practices. Innovation champions provide the vision, advocate for the framework, guide its implementation, and give it the necessary passion, drive, belief, and commitment.</li>



<li><strong>Cross-functional Teams</strong>: Assembling cross-functional teams ensures diverse perspectives and expertise are brought into the framework design process. Representatives from research and development, marketing, operations, and IT departments can contribute their insights and collaborate to define the framework’s structure, design, and implementation strategies. For example, a series of workshops that draw out the diversity of opinions and points of value helps this cross-functional work.</li>



<li><strong>Innovation Management Experts</strong>: Engaging experts in innovation management can provide valuable guidance and best practices. These experts could be internal resources, consultants, or external advisors who have experience in designing innovation frameworks and managing innovation processes. They can bring their expertise to inform the framework’s structure, ensure alignment with internal or external needs, relate these to evolving industry standards, and facilitate smooth implementation. The role here calls for a more forward-looking perspective, where the value of technology application is central to their experiences to aid more powerful understanding.</li>



<li><strong>IT Professionals</strong>: Given the emphasis on adaptability and the potential integration of technology solutions, involving IT professionals is crucial. They can provide insights into technological capabilities, data management, and integration requirements. IT professionals can work alongside innovation champions and cross-functional teams to explore how software solutions, platforms, and digital tools can support the framework’s implementation.</li>



<li><strong>Stakeholders and User Representatives</strong>: It is important to involve stakeholders and representatives of end-users in the design process. This could include customers, partners, suppliers, or other ecosystem participants. The management from top to bottom needs to be fully engaged, encouraging, and questioning to gain the financial and resource support required for this level of change. Their input can ensure that the framework addresses their needs, aligns with their expectations, fosters effective collaboration within the ecosystem, and moves towards a close alignment with existing operating systems to yield the right level of efficiency and effective returns.</li>



<li><strong>Change Management Specialists</strong>: Change management specialists can help navigate the organizational and cultural aspects of implementing a new framework. They can assist in developing a change management plan, conducting training programs, and ensuring smooth adoption by addressing potential resistance, communicating the benefits, and facilitating the transition process.</li>



<li><strong>Recognizing different system theories. </strong>There is a greater need to understand systems, are we dealing with complex adaptive systems or complicated causal systems,<strong> </strong>this needs <strong>a system theory specialist</strong> on hand to help unpick and recognize the different knowledge states so one reacts accordingly. </li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The collaborative effort of these stakeholders helps ensure that the initial structure, design, and framing of the Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework are well-rounded, aligned with organizational objectives, and address the unique needs and challenges of the organization.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The process should be iterative, involving feedback loops and continuous improvement to refine the framework over time based on real-world implementation and user experiences.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Change is never easy. The innovation pathway is often full of twists and turns.</strong> <strong>Keep focused</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/06/12/the-final-perspective-a-composable-innovation-enterprise-framework/" title="Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework">Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework</a> is radical in its design, but it can be built and validated if broken down into manageable parts. It is a project of sizable change but in “bite-sizes” to validate, build momentum, and support. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The movement to building a more composable enterprise is far more than proving technical features, like building blocks or innovation stacks, it is about working in the cloud and applying this composable thinking to the design of the innovation management process. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Achieving a radically redesigned innovation management system</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This design thinking contributes greatly towards levels of enterprise integration and flexibility, gaining increased assimilation of applications, data, and knowledge sharing as it is designed as a modular approach. Through this modular approach, innovators can constantly re-imagine delivery frameworks to fit the type of challenge and complexity they are striving to resolve. It brings greater agility, flexibility, speed, and leveraging both knowledge and the use of the applications (API, etc) applied.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If we can achieve a management system that gives the organization the ability to rapidly assemble and reconfigure innovation capabilities based on changing requirements, emerging opportunities, and challenges we are perhaps, finally, truly able to pivot, recompose, to increase agility, efficiency, and resilience in the ways we want to innovate? </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We have often wanted &#8220;faster time-to-market, increased agility, improve scalability, and manage costs in transparent and informed ways. Is it not time we gave innovation the chance to show it can be designed differently and closer to the evolving needs of the changing business landscape?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How difficult would it be to embrace this <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/06/12/the-final-perspective-a-composable-innovation-enterprise-framework/" title="Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework ">Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework, </a>as it is often argued that most people want to keep innovation management and its process simple? I wonder if that is the current incumbents, be these current innovation management software providers or individuals inside the organizations resisting change, as it brings significant uncertainty of change and disruption to the (inadequate) process, <em>one that I feel is not fit for today&#8217;s</em> and tomorrow&#8217;s innovation purpose. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>So how to set about </strong>making this change and who should be involved as it is a more radical design of a holistic nature is what I am outlining in this post and the next one focuses more on the project organization needed. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Organizations in today&#8217;s business environment need to adapt rapidly and dynamically, the need to bring the innovation management process into a constant technological advancement, and more designed by their own specific needs and not &#8220;offered&#8221; as a rigid set of solutions. We need to embrace a significant change in the way we &#8220;set about&#8221; innovation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It needs increased agility and looks to have innovation consistently redesigned to meet different challenges and needs. It needs a better set of flexible design elements and system thinking to gain from reuse and redesign rapidly. I like the term I saw the other day &#8220;<em>systems of gravity</em>&#8221; to get tasks completed faster than what is being offered today in innovating software solutions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The need is to set about <strong>building a compelling business case</strong> to make the move to embrace this (radical) design change and its potential value in returns and flexibility. I want to begin to sketch out the pathway of change this might need. It will be hard work, but doing this in stages gives growing understanding and value, and I believe ultimately rewarding.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We cannot afford not to avoid changing our innovation processes as we deal with a far more complex and challenging world. We seem to be keeping innovation as a disappointing and often frustrating outcome for many leaders of organizations today, innovation needs to be top of mind and better equipped to deliver.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here I will offer up some thoughts on how to make this change and who in the next post who should be involved, as it is a more radical design of a holistic nature. Any enterprise-enabled framework will require serious change management thinking. It is not a “big bang” solution; it should be phased. Any enterprise-enabled framework will require serious change management to understand build-up validation, the level of returns, and the growing understanding of cost/ benefit conversion. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Embracing a <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/06/12/the-final-perspective-a-composable-innovation-enterprise-framework/" title="Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework">Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework</a> will undoubtedly involve a significant shift in mindset and processes, which could raise concerns about complexity. Indeed our existing innovation processes are doing an (adequate) job. Why change? It is recognized the world over change is uncomfortable, often painful and uncertain, but still constantly confronts us, but change we must give new innovations the real chance to &#8220;crack&#8221; the complex and challenging tasks facing us all.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">However, it is important to highlight the compelling business case <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/06/16/the-potential-returns-of-the-composable-innovation-enterprise-framework/" title="and potential value in returns">and potential value in returns</a>, both in the short and long term, to motivate organizations to make this radical change. Here&#8217;s a sketch of a pathway of change and the associated benefits:</p>

<li>I<strong>dentify pain points and limitations</strong>: Start by identifying the pain points and limitations of existing innovation management processes and software. This could include difficulties adapting to rapidly changing market dynamics, a lack of collaboration and integration, inefficient resource allocation, or the inability to leverage emerging technologies effectively.</li>



<li><strong>Communicate the need for change</strong>: Clearly articulate the organization&#8217;s challenges and limitations and explain how a Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework can address these issues. Emphasize the importance of staying competitive in a rapidly evolving business landscape and the potential risks of falling behind.</li>



<li><strong>Highlight the benefits of adaptability and flexibility</strong>: One of the key advantages of a Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework is its adaptability and flexibility. Showcase how this approach allows for dynamic assembly and reconfiguration of innovation processes and resources, enabling the organization to respond quickly to market changes and customer needs. Emphasize the potential for increased agility, faster time-to-market, and improved innovation outcomes. Organizations continue to struggle with being adaptable and flexible. Does this solution offer a pathway?</li>



<li><strong>Showcase the power of collaboration and ecosystem thinking</strong>: Illustrate how embracing an innovation ecosystem and ecosystem thinking can unlock new opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and shared value creation. Highlight examples of successful ecosystem-driven innovations and the potential for increased access to resources, expertise, and markets. Ecosystem design is becoming organizations&#8217; &#8220;go-to&#8221; solution to accelerate their competitiveness.</li>



<li><strong>Demonstrate the potential return on investment</strong>: The task of building and validating a comprehensive analysis of the potential returns on investment associated with adopting a Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework is difficult as it is radical and new, but that is the essence of groundbreaking innovation solutions; we need to push through the knowns and find answers to the unknowns. This evaluation must identify cost savings through more efficient resource allocation, revenue growth through faster innovation cycles, improved product/service development, and increased market share through enhanced competitiveness. This needs a staged approach to build the validation, so the framework itself must build out in &#8220;validation&#8221; steps.</li>



<li><strong>Showcase success stories and case studies</strong>: As you learn you can justify. Share success stories and case studies of organizations successfully embracing similar frameworks. Highlight their positive outcomes, such as increased innovation efficiency, improved customer satisfaction, and market leadership. These examples can serve as proof of concept and inspire confidence in the potential value of the framework. In my limited research, multiple parts of this Composable framework have been made by how Lego has undergone change, South Western Airlines, IKEA, and many of the technology giants building out the Platform solutions with building blocks and stacks as part of their designs.</li>



<li><strong>Develop a phased implementation plan</strong>: To address concerns about complexity, develop a phased implementation plan that allows for this gradual adoption of the Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework. Start with a pilot project or a specific business unit to test parts of the framework&#8217;s structure and effectiveness and build confidence among stakeholders. Using the suggested building blocks and learning components are all common today. This phased approach minimizes disruption and allows for iterative improvements based on real-world feedback.</li>



<li><strong>Provide training and support</strong>: Offer different and structured training programs and workshops to bring the idea to life within the organization and then give ongoing support to help employees adapt to the new framework. This ensures that they understand the rationale behind the change, have the necessary skills to operate within the framework, and feel supported throughout the transition process. The diverge/converge framework and design thinking methodology are relevant and useful to see the value of change.</li>



<li><strong>Continuously measure and communicate success</strong>: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the impact of the Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework. Regularly communicate progress and success stories to reinforce the value of the change. Celebrate wins and highlight the positive outcomes achieved through the framework&#8217;s implementation. Measuring success is no different than any innovation or change project. These need to be broken down into the framework parts that need to be assessed.</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By following this pathway of change and effectively communicating a constant and compelling business case for embracing a Composable Innovation Enterprise Framework, organizations can overcome resistance to change and build a strong foundation for driving innovation excellence. </p>

<p>All companies talk about innovation and its growing importance, but why is it that still so few succeed in actually doing it on a repeatable scale?</p>
<p>What inhibits innovation? What would drive innovation success? What aspects of innovation are critical to achieving such innovative growth? Where should a company place its emphasis to gain both an improving impact on its performance and strengthen its innovation capabilities?</p>
<p>The difficulty for many is that innovation is a complex process that has many intangibles within the total mix to manage. Management today is far happier managing the ‘harder’ aspects of business, the current physical ones of everyday organization, not the ‘softer’ more intangible ones, where innovation often lies or emerges from.<span id="more-19881"></span></p>
<p>There are many variables or factors for ‘innovation success’; organisations often suffer from the inability to sustain innovation over time. There is a failure to fully appreciate or recognize that many interdependencies surround innovation. Often, ‘selective’ activities only generate limited success but sustaining innovation is often elusive without a more comprehensive, holistic approach.</p>
<p><strong>If we take the view</strong><em>: that “Innovation is holistic in nature, it needs to be addressed in this way. It covers the entire range of activities necessary to provide customer value and a satisfactory return to the business. Although innovation cannot be touched, heard, tasted or seen, it can be felt. It is probably best described as a pervasive attitude that allows businesses to see beyond the present and create the future. In short, innovation is the engine of change and in today’s fiercely competitive environment resisting change is dangerous. </em></p>
<p><em>The key driver of the organization&#8217;s ability to change is innovation. However, deciding that the organization has to be innovative is insufficient. That decision must be backed by actions that create an environment where people are so comfortable with innovation that they  are naturally looking to create it.”</em></p>
<p><strong>There are so many challenges in managing innovation.</strong></p>
<p>The key is knowing what are the critical factors for your innovation activities and their dependencies for sustaining innovation success? Identifying these is becoming a vital necessity to understand so an organization can place the appropriate resources behind them and continue to invest in the evolving aspects associated with these capabilities and competencies.</p>
<p>The question is, which are critical, which naturally occur when others begin to be put into place, and which seem to have limited or no real effect on changing the dynamics of innovation? Knowing these and having these clearer shown as a ‘return on impact/investment’ (ROII) has real business value.</p>
<p>Today, we lack a clear system model that brings the critical innovation factors out and gives them their appropriate values, and then can equally provide the ability to model different future states and conceive future scenarios through different impact investments.</p>
<p>Innovation is still not treated company-wide in a holistic way as recognising the dependencies is poorly understood. This is what needs to change.</p>
<p><strong>It is the issue of ‘rapid change’ that calls for more dynamic capabilities</strong></p>
<p>The world of innovation-based competition, price/performance rivalry, increasing returns, and the ‘creative destruction of existing competencies constitutes rapid change are all rapid and changing constantly, and we need the ability to respond, be agile and fluid to seize the new business opportunities that come with this evolving environment.</p>
<p>How do you sustain innovation, is it more through the structuring of <strong>everyday work,</strong> by creating a particular set of social rules and resources that foster specific routines or is it in creating greater specialization or competencies 100% dedicated to building a robust innovation system?</p>
<p>What are the firm-specific capabilities that can be sources of advantage, and how can combinations of competencies and resources be developed, deployed, nurtured and protected?  These need to be difficult-to-imitate combinations and integrative enough to give new sources of competitive advantage to stimulate new growth and financial return; we need a <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2020/10/11/a-pathway-to-building-more-dynamic-innovation-capabilities/">structured pathway.</a></p>
<p><strong>So what are the challenges of the knowledge-driven economy that innovation needs to drive?</strong></p>
<p>They are increasing new characteristics of markets that are constantly changing, product life cycles are shortening, and knowledge is consolidating, which leads to additional competitiveness from firms. We need to address:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>New types of innovation</strong> are taking different forms to address these changing circumstances (product, technology-led, service, business model, process and operational driven, open, in design thinking, needs relating, research-driven and in marketing and extending existing products in different ways.</li>
<li><strong>New needs of combining different stakeholders</strong> are pushing higher expectations to get winning products or services to market on time, which are exciting, new, engaging and often transformational. This calls for new ways of collaborative working.</li>
<li><strong>New approaches to innovation management</strong> that encompass efficiently and continuously innovating working together have become <em><u>the</u></em> prime driver for achieving both top-line innovation growth and bottom-line efficiency, the two main challenges facing business today but needing this combining and blending of innovation and efficiency through new, effective ways.</li>
<li><strong>New technology innovation</strong> is prompting firms to access and implement the most appropriate technology according to their need, often to simply keep competitive. There is this need to distinguish between sustaining and disruptive aspects as technology constantly changes.</li>
<li><strong>Also, pressures from both customers and shareholders</strong> often influence where firms engage and with appropriate technology, but it is increasingly disruptive and disturbing to the existing structures and systems. Building a more responsive, adaptive organization open to exploration and adoption is critical to move towards.</li>
<li><strong>A continuous need for switching and investing in different innovation management tools</strong>, not just technological ones but relational tools in the way of doing business and achieving insight. The important part of any adoption of new tools, techniques, methods or processes you need to understand the consequences and to do that, you need dedicated resources capable of interpreting the potential impact and value.</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Shifting our thinking into a more dynamic frame becomes essential today<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Innovation understanding and building strength in competencies and capabilities take an organization beyond the accepted norm of managing efficiency, quality, responsiveness, and speed- all challenging within themselves.</p>
<p>We need both the internal and external orientation to innovation and build a real &#8220;sense and respond&#8221; set of capabilities.</p>
<p>Innovation represents today’s competitive advantage statement that should be supported throughout the organization. The issue is knowing the valued dynamic capabilities needed to deliver innovation with real business value.</p>
<p>There are countless challenges to adapting and becoming fitter to innovate. Fitness comes from a deeper understanding of the parts that make innovation up. These are far from static; they are dynamic and constantly changing. You must provide an adaptive organization to manage these and many more than the abovementioned areas.</p>
<p><strong>The emphasis points towards the need for defining the dynamic innovation capabilities required.<br />
</strong></p>
<p>Dynamic capabilities emphasise management capabilities and the inimitable (unique) combinations of resources that are constantly at work across all functions to make them distinctive and valuable.</p>
<p><strong>Distinguishing innovation capabilities that are relevant are based on the type of knowledge they contain</strong>.</p>
<p>Functional capabilities allow the development of technical, practical knowledge. Integrative capabilities allow firms to absorb knowledge from external sources, where absorptive capacity development comes in.</p>
<p>Innovation requires more of a higher-order integrated capability approach to constantly learn, develop, mould and manage multiple capabilities. This required the integration of critical capabilities to successfully stimulate innovation for effective and improving performance.</p>
<p><strong>Innovation is core in any business that wants a future.</strong></p>
<p>The important point, though, is successful innovation contains core elements and processes regardless of industry, form, or type of innovation we are pursuing.  Much of the difference, though, is in its varying degrees based on these core elements.</p>
<p>My search is to find those core elements to leverage and strengthen the dynamic capabilities within an organization&#8217;s capability to innovate continuously in a sustaining manner.</p>
<p>We as organizations strive to achieve a distinct competitive advantage, and innovation is one of those real contribution points this can achieve. The need is to make the innovation capabilities and capacities a distinctive, not easy to copy, unique set. These are shaped by the context and content of innovation, the organization&#8217;s position and its choice of evolutionary paths it has decided to take or needs to take.</p>
<p>So individual components on their own have limited effect, it is the combined effect that generates the improving performance. Equally, the needs do change over time, and you have to constantly ‘refresh, challenge and stimulate’ these otherwise, you can have core rigidly set in.</p>
<p><strong>The solution, I firmly believe, </strong> is a framework that shows the mutual dependencies, how the innovation ‘system’ behaves, what are its more important impact factors which are weaker and what should be considered in the &#8216;best&#8217; innovation environment?</p>

<p><strong>The Pathway Curve Methodology </strong></p>
<p>The approach we take to embedding innovation in all its forms is a unique one that we call <strong>the Pathway Curve Methodology</strong>.</p>
<p>Innovation needs to be worked at, to grow into a deeper understanding, over time. It needs to be understood in all its different forms and often many can become confused and disappointed by their initiatives by not taking a more measured approach to them.</p>
<p>Innovation building faces a multitude of obstacles to overcome so innovation has a chance to be embedded within an organization.<span id="more-19790"></span></p>
<p>The more you wish to build from incremental, through distinctive to finally more radical, game-changing innovation you need to recognize, resolve and seek solutions that take you from where you are to where you want to be.</p>

<p><strong>Firstly what are you trying to achieve?</strong></p>
<p>Firstly you have to ask what you are trying to achieve, is it incremental innovation, distinctive, disruptive or even radical? Getting a thorough understanding of what it takes to move up this learning curve to achieve the different types of innovation takes time.</p>
<p>You gain from this approach a deeper understanding as well as it supports experimenting in ‘controlled environments’ to take these fully on board, embedded and practised.</p>
<p><strong>Here is ONE EXAMPLE of the pathway curve of understanding</strong></p>
<p>Focusing on the<strong> critical organizational impact</strong> where the return, cost and viability have a growing need for visibility, and have a learning and maturity curve to climb. It is getting to recognize differences, adapting and advancing in understanding to get to the constantly evolving innovation value-adding dashboard this curve brings.</p>

<p>Our methodology takes you through a structured approach, a way of climbing up this innovation understanding curve so the different needs you are trying to achieve (distinctive, radical, disruptive) can be managed in a clear way to support any future innovation initiative.</p>

<p>When we <strong>build capability and capacity</strong> we cannot build this simply overnight, we need to systematically build this, partly depending on what you want to achieve; incremental, distinctive or radical innovation as these are a growing set of competencies to drive you up the innovation pathway.</p>
