<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The podcast gives a good perspective of why Innovation Ecosystems are important today and what you need to do. It further covers aspects discussed within the series of posts in drawing out benefits and challenges and the relevancy and why you should care. Finally going about applying Innovation Ecosystems, looking to possibly get external help and how and where to apply this thinking. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What truly distinguishes an innovation ecosystem and makes it essential are several interrelated factors that together create a unique environment where innovation can thrive. </p>

<li class=""><strong>Public-Private Partnerships</strong>: These partnerships are often a hallmark of innovation ecosystems, where public entities collaborate with private companies to drive innovation in areas that serve the public interest, such as infrastructure, education, or healthcare.</li>

<li class=""><strong>Sustainable Innovation</strong>: By focusing on long-term goals and fostering innovation that addresses pressing global challenges, ecosystems contribute to sustainable development. This focus ensures that the innovations generated are not just viable in the short term but are also sustainable and resilient in the long run.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Resilience to Disruption</strong>: Ecosystems are better equipped to handle disruptions—whether technological, economic, or environmental—because of their adaptability, diversity, and interconnected nature. This resilience is increasingly important in a rapidly changing world.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Conclusion</strong> What distinguishes an innovation ecosystem and makes it a must-have is its ability to create a highly interconnected, dynamic, and supportive environment where innovation can flourish. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is finding the unique combinations that work for you. That unique combination of diverse knowledge, resource sharing, risk mitigation, market access, and a collaborative culture enables ecosystems to drive innovation more effectively than isolated efforts.</p>

In a world where the complexity of challenges and the pace of change are ever-increasing, innovation ecosystems are essential for driving</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We all recognize that markets are changing, complexity is growing, and challenges are more formidable to manage without extended help. This requires all businesses to face rapidly changing business environments to design their response rates and abilities to react differently. How radical will this be?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recognizing critical aspects provides organizations with a strategic framework that not only recognizes the challenges of complexity but actively leverages the <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2023/12/20/embracing-the-power-of-dynamic-ecosystems/" title="dynamic nature of the ecosystem">dynamic nature of the ecosystem</a> we need to build, to thrive in the future. To achieve this we need to break down existing complexity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2014/06/23/understanding-challenges-within-innovation-complexity/" title="">Complexity matters</a> in recognizing what it inhibits and what needs unbundling so any future design of an organization or process is (attempting) to put into place  the right processes, skills, and culture to make them more responsive, or dynamic. In any future design we can&#8217;t continue to behave in linear ways.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you can begin to identify complexity that hampers effectiveness, you can start to remove it. What you have to be very clear upon is having a complete understanding, or a well informed one on all the effects of the complexity part you are removing to enable and find the best route to value and often innovation</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is the connecting up of opportunities with the ability to design the solution in highly exploratory and exploitative ways of learning that begin to break down complexity and see new ways to evolve. This is where Ecosystems in thinking and design come in in the form of Dynamic Ecosystems for unpacking and then managing innovation. These are linkages between navigating complexity and applying dynamic ecosystem approaches.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here, knowing the <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2024/01/11/the-critical-differences-in-understanding-dynamic-ecosystems/" title="critical differences within Dynamic Ecosystems">critical differences within Dynamic Ecosystems</a>. Dynamic ecosystems can accelerate and leverage growth, shape strategies, and significantly contribute.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recognizing how to navigate complexity needs its parts to be identified so they can be replaced with the following in a dynamic ecosystem setting.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>**1. Agile Organization Structures:</strong></p>

<li class=""><strong>Clarification:</strong> In navigating complexity, an Agile Organization Structure within a Dynamic Ecosystem ensures that the organization can swiftly respond to intricate challenges, adjust strategies, and maintain a nimble approach to ever-changing conditions.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>**2. Continuous Learning:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Clarification:</strong> Navigating complexity requires a continuous learning mindset. Dynamic Ecosystems explicitly acknowledge the need for ongoing learning, adaptation, and the incorporation of new insights to navigate through the intricacies of a complex environment.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>**3. Evolving Change Management:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Clarification:</strong> Dynamic Ecosystems redefine change management as an ongoing, dynamic process rather than a one-time event. Organizations navigating complexity within a dynamic ecosystem proactively manage change, fostering resilience and adaptability.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>**4. Responsiveness to Complexity:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Clarification:</strong> Explicitly recognizing and responding to complexity is a core principle of Dynamic Ecosystems. This approach ensures that organizations are equipped to navigate through intricate challenges, leveraging the dynamic nature of the ecosystem to find innovative solutions.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>**5. Proactive Risk Management:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Clarification:</strong> Navigating complexity involves anticipating and managing risks proactively. Dynamic Ecosystems encourage a forward-thinking approach to risk management, ensuring that organizations are prepared to address potential challenges before they escalate.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>**6. Strategic Flexibility:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Clarification:</strong> Strategic flexibility is a key element in navigating complexity. Dynamic Ecosystems provide a strategic framework where organizations can dynamically adjust their strategies to navigate through the complex and unpredictable business landscape.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>**7. Network Thinking:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Clarification:</strong> Navigating complexity requires a shift from linear thinking to network thinking. Dynamic Ecosystems explicitly promote the idea that success is often contingent on interconnected relationships and the leverage of network effects.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>**8. Innovation Coherence:</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Clarification:</strong> Innovation coherence within a Dynamic Ecosystem ensures that innovation efforts are aligned with the dynamic needs of the ecosystem. This alignment contributes to an organization&#8217;s ability to navigate complexity by fostering a culture of innovation that is responsive to changing conditions.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By incorporating these elements through the concept of Dynamic Ecosystems, the approach to navigating complexity becomes more explicit and focused, it gives a framing to recognize where complexity actively leverages the dynamic nature of the ecosystem to thrive in such an environment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Designing a Composable Innovation Framework</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During May and June 2023, I worked through and concluded my thinking on why we needed to change our Innovation approach. A radical change from far to often a linear one, into a new, more up-to-date, and dynamic solution for managing innovation. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This solution recognises that innovation discovery all the way through to implementation is now so often non-linear and that is causing plenty of problems connecting all the understandings fully up in one manageable place</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have called this the<strong> Composable Innovation Framework</strong>– here is why and what went into this proposal that I feel should be adopted for managing innovation in the future.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As the investigation, validation, and viewpoints were built up over numerous posts I am summarising the series here</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>We need to shift our innovative thinking from static to dynamic.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are the critical reasons we need a radical change in our innovation approaches</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li class="">We have been in very static, traditional approaches to innovation, very segmented and often insular. As so often happens in innovation, it has complexities that seemingly grow and require multiple changes. There are far more rapid changes in the business landscape and our current innovation process often breaks down as it struggles to adjust and adapt to new data, validation and thinking. The ability to regain control across the whole development to delivery lifecycle is time consuming and resource intensive, mistakes happen, updates are missed or misunderstood and the end result is less that optimum.</li>



<li class="">We need systems and processes that are flexible, adaptable, and can enable continuous improvements but are fully connected, transparent, and integrated across the entire business. We need to approach innovation differently through connected agility, have speed and automation more central, and provide roles for a great diverse set of participants.</li>



<li class="">We need a system that encourages forming strategic alliances, partnerships, and knowledge sharing to drive innovation and create shared value in open, thoughtful, and collaborative ways. This is where technology enables these connections and triggers different thinking in the quest for moving toward more extraordinary valuable solutions—the “connected” value of behaviours thinking ecosystems and operating on collaborative platforms.</li>



<li class="">We need to encourage highly collaborative environments and organisations can consistently leverage the collective intelligence of many, find and draw in a variety and diverse set of resources, both inside and outside the organisation, and access different expertise all working within the same ecosystem and platform configuration.</li>
</ol>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This comes through the power of innovation ecosystem thinking </strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The principles of this Composable Innovation Framework are the recognition and value of having a building block and innovation stack design. </strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These<em><strong> blocks and stacks </strong></em>that house the fundamental thinking through elements and capabilities required and enable the interconnected layers of process, technologies, and resources to leverage and support the innovation efforts from concept to commercialisation and beyond on sustainable approaches.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The shift to platform thinking gives the potential for scalable and flexible foundations for collaboration, integration, and value creation. The platform enables organisations to connect different stakeholders, leverage external resources and facilitate the exchange of ideas and solutions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>We need a radically different comprehensive innovation system solution.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Innovation design does need a comprehensive solution to address the complexities of modern innovation. You gain the ability to integrate the principles of dynamic thinking, ecosystem collaboration, building block, and innovation stack thinking in their approaches where technology plays an essential role, and the foundations of a platform design to enable organisations and the individuals involved to navigate challenges and seize the opportunities in a more robust and vigorous innovation management approach.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Composable Innovation Enterprise framework aims to overcome the limitations of current traditional approaches to innovation (software) design. It focuses on collaboration, interconnectedness, and shared value creation within an innovation ecosystem. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This encourages a significant shift in mindset, culture, and potential within software solutions. It allows organisations to dynamically assemble (and reassemble) and reconfigure their innovation processes and resources constantly to adapt to the knowledge and discovery of innovation as it reveals itself in new insights and potential. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The beauty is that it is designed on a platform that scales, allows scope and flexibility, collaboration and diversity of thought, and encourages speed in knowledge exchanges and activities from its technology design.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Innovation must rely increasingly on interconnected organizations organized around a central focal point of value and impact. An <a href="https://paul4innovating.com/2018/08/01/the-chance-to-think-differently-about-ecosystems-for-innovation/">ecosystem design</a> should be in thought and design so that organizations can act differently on strategies, business models, leadership, and customer engagement to build new value and worth.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If we fail to recognize that innovation is vital to our business, to sustain it, and to enable it to grow, we eventually die. Today, more than ever, it is becoming an evolving collective endeavour. Increasingly, we are faced with growing complexities and challenges to resolve. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We need to foster collaboration between individuals, organizations, and institutions, creating a symphony of ideas that resonate far beyond the boundaries of any single actor.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">I recommend thinking around innovation ecosystems as this has many advantages;</h5>



<ol start="1" class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Greater access to a broader</strong> <strong>range of resources and expertise</strong> through the bringing together of a diverse set of organizations that can bring together technologies and customer insights from different perspectives. Also drawing in different resources not usually available to one organization offers a more significant potential to innovate more effectively, in choice, options, shared thinking and risk.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Increased collaborations and co-creation</strong> through innovation ecosystems can foster the more significant potential for collaborations and co-creations between associated parties that can “trigger” innovations that feed from these growing cooperations forming between the parties.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Greater scalability and speed</strong>. By leveraging the resources and capabilities of other organizations, the potential to scale the innovation efforts in new ways, across different channels, not open to one organization. It provides different levels of speed from the established one existing in the single organisation and capitalizes on the diversity of different reputations the partners have built up in their respective markets.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Greater flexibility and adaptability</strong> in different, more collective and imaginative ways. Multiple alerts to market changes, conditions and customers’ needs can stimulate a growing adaptability and solution design, more modular or progressive in response.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Greater potential for sustainability and social impact. </strong>Innovation ecosystems increasingly need to be designed to offer more sustainable and socially responsible solutions. Having partners who manage different parts of the lifecycle can create opportunities in designing redundancy and ease of replacement that extends and expands a product’s solution, giving an ongoing positive impact while achieving reoccurring business success.</li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It addresses the limitations of traditional innovation and management approaches, emphasizing collaboration, interconnectedness, and shared value creation within an innovation ecosystem. ​ </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Innovation Stack comprises modular building blocks that support different stages of the innovation process. ​ </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These building blocks include the different layers or processes we go through. These are the Discovery Layer, Idea or Concept Layer, Problem Validation Layer, Solution Development Layer, Business Model Design Layer, and Execution Layer. ​</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These layers and elements address various tasks and challenges in the innovation process, such as identifying opportunities, generating ideas, validating problems, developing solutions, designing business models, and executing the innovation. ​</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Designing for maximum flexibility</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Innovation Stack is flexible and can be customized to meet an organisation&#8217;s specific needs. ​Its flexibility is one of its key strengths, allowing it to be adapted to various organizational needs and contexts. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The key to best using this innovation stack is to view it as a flexible guide rather than a rigid process. It should be adapted to fit your organization&#8217;s specific needs, culture, and goals. Regular review and refinement of how you&#8217;re using the stack will ensure it continues to add value to your innovation efforts over time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Here&#8217;s how it can be flexible and how it can best be used:</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Flexible Modular Approach</strong>: Each layer can be treated as a module that can be emphasized or de-emphasized based on specific needs. Organizations can focus more on certain layers depending on their strengths or current challenges.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Non-Linear Application</strong>: While the layers suggest a logical progression, they don&#8217;t have to be strictly sequential. Teams can move back and forth between layers as needed, allowing for iteration and refinement.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Scalability:</strong> The stack can be applied to both small, incremental innovations and large, disruptive projects. Depending on the scope and resources available, it can be scaled up or down.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Customization:</strong> Organizations can add sub-layers or specific tools within each layer to suit their unique processes. The terminology and focus of each layer can be adjusted to align with an organization&#8217;s culture and language.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Integration with Existing Processes:</strong> It can be integrated with other methodologies, such as Agile, Design Thinking, or Lean Startup principles.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>The aim of this Composable Innovation Framework </strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my view, its design and focus on Innovation Stacks and Building Blocks organized into specific layers show real potential improvements over existing frameworks.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Briefly, here&#8217;s an analysis of its strengths and potential advantages:</strong></p>

<li class=""><strong>Comprehensive Coverage: </strong>The framework covers the entire innovation process from discovery to execution, which is more comprehensive than some existing models that might focus more on creativity and ideation or, separately, implementation alone.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Flexibility and Adaptability</strong>: The modular nature of the building blocks and layers allows for greater flexibility than more rigid, linear models. This adaptability is crucial in today&#8217;s fast-changing business environment.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Alignment with Modern Business Practices</strong>: The composable approach aligns well with current trends in business and technology, such as agile methodologies and microservices architecture.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Balance of Structure and Creativity</strong>: It provides a structured approach without stifling creativity, which can be challenging in some traditional innovation frameworks.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Scalability: </strong>The framework appears scalable and applicable to both small projects and large-scale innovations, which is an improvement over one-size-fits-all approaches.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Integration of Business Model Design</strong>: Including a Business Model Design layer addresses a standard gap in many innovation frameworks that focus solely on product or service development.</li>

There is a need to resolve immediate, mid-term, and long-term issues to show progressive thinking on how to grow collaboratively. How to collaborate to deliver impact, and create value when building your thinking in products, services, or new business models on any Partner Ecosystem design and thinking. One methodology stands out for me: the three-horizon framework</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Partner ecosystems are highly valuable for delivering on these ambitions. Partner Ecosystems enable you to go beyond addressing immediate and surface-level issues to tackle deeper, systemic challenges and position clients at the forefront of collaborative and co-creative approaches. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my view, this requires a progressive mindset that considers growth, impact, and value across various time horizons. This mindset lends itself really well to applying the <strong>three-horizon methodology.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The concept of three-horizon modelling, which considers short-term resolutions, mid-term growth, and long-term impact and value creation, is particularly relevant in this context.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Immediate Needs / Short-Term Resolutions (Horizon 1):</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="">Partner ecosystems should address immediate challenges and resolve pressing issues, such as supply chain disruptions, resource shortages, or regulatory changes and compliance.</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="">However, these short-term solutions should be designed with a broader vision in mind, laying the foundation for more sustainable and scalable approaches in the future. </li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="">The searching for underlying root causes or systemic issues that need to be recognized and addressed later as partner ecosystems can develop short-term solutions that address the immediate problem and lay the foundation for more sustainable and long-term solutions.</li>
</ul>

<li class="">Collaborations within the ecosystem should prioritize knowledge sharing and data transparency, enabling a deeper understanding of the power of openly collaborating and sharing insights,</li>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="">Partner ecosystems should focus on mid-term strategies that enable growth, innovation, and competitive advantage. This involves co-creating new products, services, or business models that leverage the collective expertise and resources of the ecosystem partners.</li>



<li class="">Building on the insights from short-term collaborations, partner ecosystems should drive growth and innovation by co-creating new products, services, or business models that significantly increase competitive advantage.</li>



<li class="">By extracting and exploiting ecosystem partners&#8217; collective expertise, resources, and diverse perspectives to anticipate and respond to evolving market trends, customer needs, and technological advancements more effectively.</li>



<li class="">Mid-term strategies should also consider the potential impact on various stakeholders, including employees, communities, and the environment, ensuring responsible and sustainable growth.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Long-term Vision, Impact and New Value Creation (Horizon 3):</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="">Partner ecosystems should develop a long-term vision that transcends immediate commercial interests and addresses broader societal and environmental challenges, often contributing to underlying causes.</li>

<li class="">Initiatives on this horizon should focus on broader areas of concern and contribution to solving, such as climate change mitigation, social equality, public health, and sustainable development, ultimately contributing to preserving human life and well-being. This involves collaborating with diverse stakeholders, such as academia, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and local communities, to co-create solutions that have a lasting positive impact.</li>

<li class=""><strong>Innovation as a Guiding Principle</strong>: Make innovation a core guiding principle. The most successful organizations embrace innovation as a continuous process, always seeking ways to improve products, services, and processes.</li>



<li class=""><strong>The Art of Anticipation</strong>: Highlight the importance of anticipating trends. Encourage your clients and customers to become trend-spotters, to give feedback observations and encourage those who can identify emerging opportunities before they become mainstream as essential partners to you</li>



<li class=""><strong>Strategic Partnerships</strong>: Emphasize the value of strategic partnerships and collaborations. By actively seeking partnerships, organizations can access new resources, markets, and expertise to help shape their industry and influence the future shape and their destiny within this.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the third and final part of my questioning on looking towards the future and how innovation will evolve, starting from the original thread of looking over the evolution of innovation in the past twenty-five years, since 1999.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post is about what has evolved and then what will evolve. There is a very different innovation pathway ahead of us, and then I touch upon a vastly different future at the end of this post.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Innovation will evolve very differently, linked tightly to the organization&#8217;s future design, no more cutting it loose, housed separately or outside the core.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><em>Then, my question here is asking Gemini to go deeper into what has changed since 1999, more specifically, looking at the impact of Ecosystems, technology, and platforms.</em></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I have shifted my thinking about innovation to Innovation and Business Ecosystem applications. I wanted to understand how this has evolved.</p>

Organizations must embrace a continuous learning, collaboration, and experimentation culture</em> <em>to thrive in this dynamic landscape. Ecosystems, Technology, Platforms, Cross-collaborations- how?&#8221;</em></strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;Sure, here is a breakdown of how ecosystems, technology, platforms, and cross-collaboration have changed since 2019:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Ecosystems</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>From Closed to Open Ecosystems:</strong> Historically, innovation ecosystems were often closed, with companies operating within their own silos and collaborating with a limited set of partners. However, there has been a shift towards open ecosystems, where companies collaborate more openly with a wider range of stakeholders, including startups, research institutions, and even competitors. This openness fosters innovation by bringing together diverse perspectives and expertise.</li>

This egalitarianism is driving innovation by creating a more dynamic and creative environment.</li>



<li class=""><strong>From Tacit Collaboration to Explicit Collaboration:</strong> Historically, collaboration was often tacit, with knowledge and ideas exchanged informally. However, there is a trend towards explicit collaboration. <p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Of course AI, immersive technology, the Metaverse are huge in their impact</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perhaps I have guided the answer to the question I asked, but it was asking more about the changes  that we are grappling with so as to thrive in innovation in the future and whether it &#8220;confirms&#8221; my focus shift in the last few years.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">As we look towards the future, we need a different perspective</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Much of innovation will lie in our effective use of all that technology can provide and how we deal with it in the future. <strong>AI is the elephant in the innovator&#8217;s room,</strong> and we are currently figuring out how to harness it or let it loose. Is this going to be artificial intelligence or augmented intelligence?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Gemini touched on the shifts in human and data that will potentially combine to give us a different ability to visualize, experience, connect and explore a vastly different world of immersive and interactive exploration and experiments. Will ecosystems, platforms and collaborations just fade away in the background, just accepted as what is needed and expected? </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I think we are badly positioned today to open up and collaborate in sharing environments and going through the orientation and differences is essential. Open innovation, championed by <a href="https://haas.berkeley.edu/faculty/chesbrough-henry/" title="Henry Chesbrough"><strong>Henry Chesbrough</strong></a>, took years to establish.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We need to leverage the <strong>Open Ecosystem Innovation </strong>establishment, more interconnected and aligned to collaborative partners all working towards a common aim or solution, using technology and combining resources but this needs more integration with all parts of the business. Innovation is an <a href="https://ecosystems4innovating.com/the-innovation-ecosystem-where-creativity-is-the-foundation-in-the-hierarchy-of-business-ecosystems/" title="Innovation Ecosystem play">Innovation Ecosystem play</a> for future prosperity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We have learnt that innovation cannot stay as the island of internal experts and highly skilled people are not able to deliver the &#8220;connected&#8221; needs of customers as the solutions are often complex and require multiple players contributing to the solutions needed. It needs to be thrown open&#8221; to the diversity of opinions and knowledge and connect to many dynamic strategic and operational interactions through interactions between organizations and individuals.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We can achieve this by enabling technology and platforms to be more central to the collaborating and partnering environment. Yet, the management methods and practices will need this network-type thinking, where value co-creation fosters sustaining growth. Interactions and concurrent collaborations require a different management comprehension.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>There is a very different innovation pathway ahead of us</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The network effect, collaborating spaces, and how we delineate innovation are all &#8220;up for grabs&#8221; as we figure out how to solve problems, more complex and challenging ones, that will find technology managing human interactions increasingly.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I need to look forward from today, 2024, and that needs a very different thinking and recognition of the many changes that have occurred but also in earlier stages of understanding their value ( example AI). What you do recognize that we are on a journey to a radically different pathway towards innovation. Still, looking to the past to see future patterns is always good.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One big difference &#8220;<strong><em>What gets old is certainly  pretty quickly</em></strong>&#8220;, and that is why we all need to be interconnected to learn, adapt and respond in a rapidly challenging and complex world to find what is valued and needed. Scale, scope and speed will dominate and we need to master these.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading">My second question relating to collaborating over these last 25 years was &#8220;How are Organizations adapting differently to these changes so as to become more open, agile, and collaborative? Has<strong><em> the methodology changed? Have the tools differed or is it the acceleration of technology connecting it all up?</em></strong></h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Organizations are adapting to the changing landscape of innovation by adopting new methodologies, tools, and technologies. These changes are enabling them to become more open, agile, and collaborative, which is essential for success in today&#8217;s fast-paced and interconnected world.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Methodologies</strong></p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Agile methodologies:</strong> Organizations are increasingly adopting agile methodologies, such as Scrum and Kanban, to manage their innovation processes. These methodologies emphasize iterative development, continuous testing, and customer feedback, allowing organizations to adapt to changing requirements and market conditions quickly.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Design thinking:</strong> Design thinking is another methodology that is gaining traction in innovation. This human-centred approach emphasizes understanding user needs and behaviours, rapid prototyping, and iterative refinement. It helps organizations create products and services that truly resonate with their customers.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Lean startup:</strong> Lean startup is a methodology that helps organizations validate their ideas early and often. By focusing on rapid experimentation and learning, lean startup enables organizations to identify and eliminate waste, reduce risk, and increase the likelihood of success.</li>

<li class=""><strong>Prototyping tools:</strong> Prototyping tools, such as Sketch, Figma, and Balsamiq, are making it easier for organizations to create and iterate on prototypes of their products and services. These tools enable teams to visualize and test their ideas early in the development process, identify potential problems, and make improvements before investing significant resources in development.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Data analytics tools:</strong> Data analytics tools are providing organizations with insights into customer behaviour, market trends, and competitor activities. These insights are helping organizations make informed decisions about their innovation strategies, such as which ideas to pursue and how to allocate resources.</li>

<li class=""><strong>Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML):</strong> AI and ML are being used to automate tasks, identify patterns, and make predictions in the innovation process. <li class=""><strong>Blockchain:</strong> Blockchain is a distributed ledger technology that is being used to create secure and transparent ecosystems for innovation. For example, blockchain can be used to track the development of open-source software, manage intellectual property, and share data securely across different organizations.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Internet of Things (IoT):</strong> The IoT is connecting devices and systems in real time, creating a wealth of data that can be used to inform innovation. For example, IoT data can be used to track customer behaviour, optimize supply chains, and develop new products and services.</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;By adopting these new methodologies, tools, and technologies, organizations have been taking steps to become more open, agile, and collaborative. These changes are helping them to innovate faster, create better products and services, and build stronger relationships with their customers and partners&#8221;</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading">Over three posts I wanted to look back at innovation and how it has evolved from 1999 to 2024, a period of twenty-five years. </h5>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I asked Google Gemini five questions. In my first post, I asked what the main aspects of innovation thinking and design changed from 1999 to 2019. This post looked at how collaboration and ideation evolved, the organization&#8217;s ability to adapt, and what helped. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The third post, coming next, looked at the emergence of ecosystems and platforms and began to gaze more into the future of innovation and from this I began to speculate how it will radically change with the fast rise of AI creating disruption and different opportunities. Are we really ready in our structure, system architecture or mindset to be so open, collaborative and willing to co-create? I personally don&#8217;t think so.</p>
